My 15 year old nephew has talked with his parent's about staying home from a one night vacation. He has let them know he will act responsibly, and not get into trouble. He is mature and quite able to take care of himself. Is it legal to let him stay home alone?

Yes- There is nothing in the law that says it is illegal to leave a child at home. As long as it doesn't endanger the child's welfare there is nothing illegal about it. If he's responsible and mature enough to take care of himself and not get into trouble then there shouldn't be an issue, but it is definitly not illegal

It would probably depend on which state you live in. Most states would say it's legal. Nate the Great is wrong. I'm 15. If you were 7 and your parents let you stay home alone and a kidnapper, theif (sp?), or some other bad person came, you'd be clueless on what to do. If the guy is responsible, he should be able to stay home alone (night included.) After all, he won't be at home when he's 18. You've got to trust him and he's got to act responsibly and take care of himself when he's off on his own. Oh yeah, if a 15 year old is old enough to get a job at a store like it is where I live, he is totally old enough to stay home alone!

Yes, 15 is old enough to be left at home for one night depending on the child. I left my 15 year old home alone at night once in a while but there are some 18 year old children in this world that I myself would not leave alone so it just depends on the child.

dependson the state actually. but.. even if some busybody reported it.. and said teenage is very responbile and marute ahd didnt do anything stupid.. DHS wouldnt do anything about it other thanbenosy for a while. now on theother hand if it ended up a teen party movie that night. cops were called and drinking was found the parents would take the heat for it all.. and be responsonsible for any thing bad that happined( drunk driving accidents.. what not) to party goers. cuz its thier house. and thier 15 yo

It's legal.
It may not be safe unless the 15 year old is responsible and mature.
I sat home alone all the time and i stayed home for a whole weekend just me and my bro and i 13 and he 14.
you should totally give he/she a chance.

Yes its legal. Once a child hits the age of 12 they can be left alone for temporary periods such as overnight!

its legal to let a 12 year old stay home my mom would let me stay home when i was 7 of course i think its safer to let a 7 year old stay home rather than a 15 year old... you ever seen that movie "House Party"? lol

yes. I stay at home all the time all alone for days on end. & i am only 15 myself. just make sure someone calls to check up on him.
