We keep our cat's litter box in our laundry room because that is the only place we have in our home for it. However, about a year and a half ago (after I had our second son) she started peeing on any clothes left in baskets or on the floor. These clothes are usually literally 2 feet away from her cat box. She is 8 years old and we have never had a problem with her peeing anywhere other than her box. She sometimes even ventures out at this point and pees on clothes left on the floor in other rooms. We feel like it is a behavioral thing because she really only seems to do it when she is mad at us for something (i.e. we go out of town, we leave her outside longer than normal, we raise our voices, etc). We've had her from the beginning and obviously love her, but she's ruining clothes, blankets, towels, carpeting, etc. If anybody has any non-violent suggestions, they would be very helpful!

You may need to change your cat litter more often because a cat does not like to use a dirty litter box.

Yeah, some cats we've had did this, but on the living room carpet. At least clothes are washable. And yes, it's a behavioral thing, but I don't know of any way you can get a cat to do anything, a cat will do as it pleases. We did a lot of carpet cleaning. He died about 9 years ago from cancer. Hopefully the solution to your problem may be as simple as changing what kind of kitty litter you're using. Good luck.

Is The Litter Box Clean?

I had the same problem with one (of 4 ) of my cats. I thought he had a bladder infection, after ruling this out with a urinalysis at the vets. I decided to pick up the clothes, and have them no where near the box's...surprisingly this works...I have never had this problem again in YEARS (at least 6) It was very hard to do, because I always piled my laundry...but I had to to keep my sanity. Please just try keeping the laundry from piling on the floor, and having the kids take the baskets to their room when cleaned...

Hope that helps, but please rule out anything physically wrong with her first.

You can not rule out a urinary tract infection without going to see a veterinarian. Also if she isn't spayed, that could be part of the issue. A veterinarian would deal with this problem all the time and can talk you through several different behavioral modification techniques.
So please make an appointment soon.

Try getting a hamper with a lid that you can close. This way, there is nothing on the floor except her litter box.

My cat was also having issues like this and I figured out that it was because I had changed the brand of her litter and she was allergic to it. Maybe you've changed litter or maybe your cat has developed an allergy or something. Changing it up might work.

My best guess is the box isn't clean and she's letting you know.

She could also be marking and trying to cover up the sent of your son. I'd suggest a hamper with a lid on it.

It sounds to me like she is very jealous of the new baby. I'm sure your cat was younger (duh) when the first was born and she's just plain jealous. Another thing - you might want to have her checked for a urinary tract infection. These can come and "go" and when they do hit hard, a can will urinate anywhere. Only antibiotic from a vet clears them up completely.

Change her litter to something more natural to attract her to it. I use Nature's Miracle. Also, put one or more extra litter boxes around the house.
