I had to point it out to some of them one day. The lady had the nerve to tell me I had to put "religous" on my sign too. I told her, "Soliciting is soliciting, wheather you are pushing magazines or God, it's all the same. I don't want any of it, thus the sign".

Yeah, well Jehovas and Mormans are lumped into Christians if you look at the percentage charts of the major religions.

Do what I did, in addition of putting a NO SOLICITING sign on the door: Do not under any circumstances open the door for anyone you're not expecting, and let your family and friends know before hand that if they want to visit, they are to call first. Anyone takes issue with that, say that we're living in dangerous times and that you don't want to open the door thinking it is them when they're someone else.
Also, make a modification to your no soliciting sign to say as follows: NO SOLICITING AND THAT MEANS YOU!!!
(Make the word "you" slightly bigger and bolder).
On the other hand, if that doesn't work, you might have to include to the sign that it also means religious organizations.
---------------
As far as sinistermooes and mizzmisti (before my comment): Have you ever heard the term "A person's home is their castle"? This "nobody promised you a rose garden" is for when you are outside interacting with the rest of society. Inside your own home you have a right to limit who comes in and why.
------
To Daniel L (below me) and to those of you who are trying to justify your actions: YA'LL ARE A PEACE OF WORK!
-----
As far as those saying that "God has an important message" what makes ya'll think that we don't hear of it ad-nauseum? It is everywhere! It's in the media, it's in our publications, it's at our workplace (despite the rules, there will always be someone who "witnesses"), anywhere we may go to do business, there are the Salvation Army at most stores during the Christmas holidays? We don't need to be invaded in our homes, and unlike the person's analogy of the "house being on fire" (which is totally absurd), we have a right to be in our homes and in peace, especially in homes that are religious, but not Christians.

As an Ex JW I can tell you that they believe they are ordained by god to come knock on your door and push that crap on you when ever they like also they have quotas to fill.
If you don't regularly push watchtowers and awakes in the faces of unsuspecting victims, the church will publicly shame you. and if you refuse they will at first council you then put you on what they call reproof. When the elders decide weather or not you are faithful enough to be worthy of having the others talk to you or continue the shunning. Since the CULT so consumes your life when your in it the only people you associate with are in the church so with out them you have no friends or support network.
I was never disciplined for this, rather for asking questions I was threatened with privet reproof which was between me and the elders. I used that time to question the church even more only to unravel a further fabric of lies half truths and discovered I didn't have the right to irritate people and project my false information on them.
I left and have never looked back.
If they come back again have them arrested for trespassing that should send a message maybe one day they will stop publicly recruiting and the numbers will dwindle to the few who are so brainwashed there is no hope.

They are not soliciting, they are there to save your life. If your house was on fire wouldn't you want them to knock on your door and warn you? That's how important the work is.
You asked why they do what they do, that's the answer.
I think they're a pain in the ***, I got a little sticker that has a picture of a couple of people holding up the bible and has a circle with a line drawn through it. The universal stay away sign, no words needed - very effective. One place you can get them is American Atheist.

We are seeking those individuals that would like to listen. In our search for those person we run into many people that don't want to listen. Thus, we bid people a good day and move on. For those of you who believe our coming to your door just to see if you would like to learn about the bible is soliciting, you need to look up the meaning of the word solicit. It is not soliciting just to knock on a person door and have a discussion. If you don't want to talk with Jehovah's Witnesses just let them know that and they will leave you alone.

You would think people no matter what there religion would see a no soliciting sign and think it applied to them. I don't know of many religions that I would consider christian that do the door to door thing, around here it's mostly Mormons or Johova's Witnesses.

I have the same problem.
We have the same sign, and yet bible thumpers still come calling.
I personally think that people have the right to promote what they want to , but that they should have to register their names and home addresses someplace before it is legal to go door-to-door selling religion, vacuum cleaners, whatever. And they should have to identify themselves (full name) to anyone that asks when they come calling.
that way, I can go to THEIR home and return the favor. During dinner, in the middle of a movie, at 2am... whenever I feel like it.

People who believe their actions are sanctioned by God seem to believe that the laws, rules, and requests of Man do not apply to them. Fanatics are fanatics, whether they're strapping bombs to their chests or invading your privacy despite your sign.
I have friends who say the Jehovah's Witnesses hit them up about three times per week, regardless of signage. She finally put up a sign that says You Ring This Doorbell, You Die. It's store-boughten, too, so apparently this is a common enough problem that they can sell enough signs to warrant making them.
Good luck with it!

if it was a woman it was probably a JW... they are not even Christian... They think they are exempt from that warning... I have seen them do this repeatedly...I was a door-to-door salesman long befor becoming of the Christian Faith... and I would never knock after seeing such a notice... bad for business... I had many cusomers tell me they had just been visited for the umpteenth time by the JWs...even thought they told them not to call again...

It's unfortunate that this happens because it leaves a bad taste in your mouth for the whole group. Missionaries (regardless of their affiliation) should respect your wishes. Missionary work is still soliciting even though they're not selling anything, per se.

Because they do not feel that what they are doing is soliciting (although it is).
An addition to the sign that says "no canvassing or religious callers" makes it clear--if they continue to ignore that, then you are well within your moral rights to tell them to get lost in the bluntest way possible.
