I am thinking about buying a VW - either a Polo, Golf or Jetta. But, which one? And should I go diesel?? Please help! Experience will be useful. I never owned a VW.

I cannot believe the people who are unhappy with their VW. I love mine. It is a 97 Jetta GLS, 5 speed, 109k miles, original clutch. A few small things here and there-brakes, a wheel bearing, axle, and starter. Nothing major to complain about-no engine problems. I get good mileage (27 mpg) which is nothing compared to the vehicles most of my family and friends drive. It's fast when it needs to be, smooth, compact, and comfy. She's never let me down. I would love to have a diesel, simply for the gas mileage, but she's a great, reliable car, and plan to keep her around until she finally dies (which shouldn't be for a VERY long time!)
The only problem I have noticed is electrical. The spedometer kicks out from time to time, but being standard, I know how fast I'm going. No biggie, in my book.

it really depends on what you do with it. how old you are and what you can afford. I have three dubs and I love them all for different reasons. I have a 2004 TDI Jetta, I love the MPG that I get from the diesel. It I think is the best. but you will probably pay more up front than the base model, due to the fact that VW wont be bringing the big d back in 07. and as long as you take proper care of the car they will run for a very long time. I would however suggest not getting an automatic. especially if you get an older one.

As far as golf or jetta, they are pretty much the same chassis, the golf I think is a bit lighter, but will give less cargo space.

The new models both golf(rabbit)(gti) and jetta are very roomy, and a large comfortable backseat.

My wife has the new GTI and I also have an MK1 Rabbit.

More information as to what you are looking for can lead to a better answer.
