An explanation would be much appreciated.

In that case (thank-you for your explanations), I recall reading somewhere in the Bible that those that returned to ashes will rise once again when Jesus returns. I could never find that part again (if anyone knows?) and I was curious if that means that we neither enter heaven or hell until he returns, in which everyone (ashes, dust, corpse, etc.) rise and face judgment?

Or maybe I'm just entirely mistaken? lol

Good question...I often wonder this myself. If our Christian loved ones are actually with Christ or "sleeping"...I guess it doesn't matter b/c if they're sleeping, they don't know it.

A few scriptures...

"But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you." (Romans 8:11 KJV)

"For this we declare to you by the word of The Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of The Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For The Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air." (1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 RSV).

"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and present with the Lord." --- immediately?

A phrase that dates back to when all of Christianity accepted Genesis as literal truth. According to that book, God created Adam from the dust of the Earth and when Adam fell He was warned that from dust he came and to dust he would return.

Ashes to ashes refers to the same concept. It was added for poetic repetition.

Don't forget the rest of it: "in sure and certain hope of the resurrection".

What is said at the internment, is "In sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ, we commend to almighty God our brother/sister .(name)... and we commit his/her body to the ground (or other resting place), earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. The Lord bless (name) and keep him. The Lord make his face shine on (name) and be gracious to him. The Lord look upon him with favor and give him (make sign of the cross) peace."

Ashes, is a way to acknowledge a unity with the early martyrs who were burned as well as those who have chosen cremation.

It is usually said at funerals. If you listen to all of it, it says, From dust you were formed, and to dust you return. As for the ashes, I think maybe (my opinion) it comes from the old days, when someone mourned, they sprinkled themselves with ashes and wore sackcloth. Not sure, just guessing.

This refers to the fact that God created humans from dirt (dust) and that when we die our bodies will be returned to the Earth and decay into dust again. It is just emphasizing the temporary nature of life.

Genesis 2:19
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

Ecclesiastes 3:20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

Psalm 103:14
For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

Adam began with dust when God grabbed some to make Adam., you and I will turn to dust if Christ doesn't come back soon.
