I imagine a big deep booming voice, possibly accompanied by some flaming shrubbery.

Could be all of these things. God can 'speak' or rather COMMUNICATE to you in any possible way: voice in your head, TV programme, slogan on a billboard advert or a newspaper headline, song lyric, a dream you have, a reply on Yahoo Answers, fresh breeze outside, gut feeling, conversation you overhear, passage in a book, plot of a film, and the BEST ONE OF ALL...your own experience.
If something resonates with you and makes you sit up and take notice, then that is God communicating with you.

the first time i knew god was real it was a feeling more than a voice. I felt peace and love in a way i'd never felt before, that was his way of telling me he was there. he usually talks to me now through other people (words and pictures) but some people hear a voice (usually their own voice in their head but definately from God) or through scripture, someone gave me a scripture verse that god said would help me in a difficult time and it was absolutely the thing i needed to hear. you need mature christians to tell you.

Laugh - I was gonna say Larry Grayson - Laugh but I think it a bit rude really. I think God will sound like someone each one of us loves the most. A parent, grand parent, etc.

I think that God is an old man with a white beard and sounds really mellow and calming.

Amusing.
In the movie 'Ruling Class' (1972). Peter O'Toole believes he's the son of God. When asked what makes him think he's Jesus. O'Toole replies, 'Well, one day, I was praying to Jesus. And I found I was talking to myself.'

Why don't you find out???
Open up the bible and start reading, God will speak to you, it is highly unlikely that his voice would be audible, like chatting to a mate face to face. But, more like..... as you read from the pages of the bible He will speak directly to your heart.
