first, always use a sharp knife; it's quicker and takes less effort. Rinse the onion in cold water before chopping, then, cut off the top and bottom of the onion. Set the onion on the cutting board and make several vertical slices in the onion (all going in the same direction) but DONT cut all the way through to the bottom. then make several vertical slices perpendicular to the first ones, again, DONT cut all the way to the bottom (like you're cutting the onion into a grid). You may have to hold the onion at this point to keep it from going all over the place, but it's worth it in the end. Finally, turn the onion on its side and slice it vertically, making appropriate sized chunks for whatever recipe you're using them in.

Put them in the freezer for about 5 to 10 minutes before cutting. It's the gas that is released from the cells when they are cut that makes you cry. The colder the onion the less gas gets released when cut. The water idea works by the same principle, the water captures the gas and flushes it away. But its harder to cut under running water.

Try cutting them near your stove with the burner on (got this from a Martha Stewart suggestion) it works. Another method is to make the onion really cold before you cut it. This is hard though, because if you put it in your freezer too long, it damages it.

I've heard that if you hold a match between your teeth, it will stop you from crying. Also, I've noticed that onion we put in the fridge before cutting them usually are less strong.

Believe it or not, if you keep your mouth wide open while cutting onions, it squeezes your tear ducts and the tears are not so bad. Now you have to know that this is not such a pretty picture...so I only do it when I'm cooking by myself! ha-ha But it usually works for me. Good luck!

Refridgerate them for about an hour, or freeze for about 20 minutes. That keeps the juices from flowing while cutting. Also, if you have a vented hood in your kitchen, turn it on. That will help draw the fumes out of the kitchen while chopping and leave it on if you are cooking them on the stove top.

Chew Gum. But you have to start before you cut the onion or it won't work.

*Run under water while cutting them
*Put a toothpick in your mouth while cutting them.
I worked at a convience store that sold hotdogs and had to cut onions. A old man saw me cryin' and told me to put a toothpick in my mouth and it would keep the tears at bay. I thought he was nuts! turned out he was right. I've done it ever since.
