No you can't use a people trimmer. They don't cut dog nails, just squish them. The trimmer I have was about $10 and it was the cheapest one they had. Most clippers don't cost more than $20 and a general rule is the more expensive the clipper is the better quality it is. I find the cheep ones do an OK job but they don't last very long.

I do trim my dog's nails on a bi-weekly basis using a human nail trimmer. There are special dog nail trimmers that some people use which make it a little easier but I have no problems with the using regular human nail clippers - you just have to be careful to only trim the very ends.

The cheapest I have found is about $5, and I don't know how great it is. I don't trim my dogs myself, they don't sit still long enough, it's a 2 or 3 person job. I take my dogs to work with me to get their nails trimmed, of course, I work for a vet, so that's not an option for everyone. But, your vet will trim your dogs nails for you if you ask, I don't know how much they will charge though.

As far as human trimmers, it depends on the type of dog you have. If you have a little dog with really thin nails, then human trimmers may work fine, but I have brittany spaniels, there is no way that I could use a human nail trimmer on them.

If a dog is walked regularly on pathing it's claws doesn't need trimming often.
You can buy nail clippers for dogs and they differ from peoples but if not sure how to do then take to a vet because you can trim too much and actually make the nail bleed. Just trim the ends off if do yourself. If you place your finger in the middle of the dogs paw pads it separates the 'dog toes' and makes the trimming easier.
I hope this helps

there are certain trimmers for dogs. It makes the process quicker and less painful. Human clippers would put a lot of pressure on the nails. Mine cost around 6-10

I use a dremmel with a sandpaper attachment to file down my dog's nails. I have a large dog (weimaraner) with dark nails so using regular dog clippers can be difficult. Using a dremmel, you won't hit the quick, because it files the nails down rather than cutting them. Also, since I started using it when my dog was a pup, he's used to it and doesn't mind my doing it. I know that dremmel now makes a small version just for nail filing and you can find them at pet stores, however, this version doesn't have much power and doesn't work for my large dog, if your dog is small it might work great...they are about 15 dollars. The type I have you can get at any hardware store for 70-90 dollars...it also comes with all sorts of attachments that are useful around the house.

yes you should keep your dogs nails trimmed. you can purchase a pair of nail trimmers at your local pet store or even walmart carries that item now. If you go to a grooming salon you can expect to pay between $6-$12. I recommend doing that first so you will be aware of the proper way to trim, otherwise you could do harm to your dog. If the nail is trimmed to short it will bleed and is painful to the animal.

a human nail clipper just is not strong enough for dogs nails. I think the clipper I got, and it's a good one, was $12.95. I trim my dogs nails, you just have to be sure not to trim them too much. If your dogs nails are white or clear, it will be easy to see where the nails are still "alive" so to speak. If you cut off too much, it hurts them and they bleed like crazy. If they are dark and you can't tell, use the less is better theory when trimming.

I trim all of my dogs nails myself. (I have 4 dogs.) No, it's not a good idea to use human trimmers on them. Their nails are round instead of flat, and it might split them and cause bleeding.

I bought a really nice plier-shaped pair of clippers, with curved blades, for about $9.00. Just be careful not to cut back too far. Stay away from the pink part of the nail. If your dog's nails are black, use caution, and just cut the tips off.

No I don't. They cost 3-7 dollars. If they fit (human clippers) you can. I walk my dogs alot on concrete, it wears their nails down so i don't have to hold 134 pounds of rott down and trim his nails. Not a good time...
Look at the nail and do not cut the "solid" part of the nail or the quick, it will bleed like a sob. Just clip the hollow looking part.
