This girl named alex and i have been going out for a while and she confessed that she wants to be with me forever but how can i tell that she really loves me and is not just saying that to make me happy?

How old are you? It sounds like you're still pretty young yet, so I'm just going to assume your a kid for now, and if that's the case, you need to know something important.
Dating for a "while" to kids usually means just a few weeks to a couple months, or maybe even a year if they're lucky, and if that's something that applies to you, don't be so naive. Young girls (even the ones in their late teens or even sometimes older sadly) usually say these things early on in the relationship without fully realizing just what kind of commitment that love actually is.
Love and infatuation are so easily confused all the time by kids and adults alike, so it's no wonder you've resorted to asking this huge mass of total strangers for their opinion. I have no doubt in my mind that your girlfriend is in her own little "fantasy world" when she says stuff like this. I know, it sucks, but you'll understand better when you're older.
I'm not trying to get you down kid. However, you should realize that this isn't something she's necessarily lying to you about. You can tell when she says it to you that she is certain of her words, but I'm telling you from my own experience, she just doesn't have the life experience yet to understand what exactly the words "love" and "forever" really mean; much like yourself.
To know if someone loves you, you have to know that you love her back. Make no mistake, love is not something only one person feels in a relationship. True love, if such a thing exists in this world, only comes about when their relationship has had time to mature. In other words, love is something that grows over time between two people; you can't just create it out of thin air.
So if you're skeptical about it now, you can be sure that it's not real...yet. Only time and time alone can tell you if she really understood what she meant when she said "forever."

How long is a while? Are you happy with her? Do you have similar future goals (family, location, work/stay at home)?
Why did you use the word confess? If someone wants to spend forever with you, it wouldn't be a confession.
If you're needy, and she can pick up on it, you can fall victim to hearing things like this. Your happiness would be coming from an external source and not from your life being complete w/o her.

You'll know it with time. People who really love you want the best for you, and are not selfish towards you, are willing to make some sacrifices for you, they tell you the truth and are there for you in good times and bad, support you, and also help you grow spiritually (some times they need to be a little bit hard when you're making bad mistakes, and that's also a sign of love, because they won't let you fall).
I heard once a wise person say that you know you love somewone when that love makes you a better person.
It's difficult to write a checklist, but in sum, you'll see it through her actions.
Respect her and treat her with kindness, because a person in love is opening herself to you and exposing her vulnerability.

How does she treat you? With respect and kindness? Can you talk to her and can she talk to you with total honesty? Do you have fun together? Do you trust eachother? Do you agree about where you want to go in life (education, kids or no kids, where you want to live...)? Do you have similar values? How do your families get along?
Even if she really loves you and you really love her, all these other things are important if you are going to be together forever.

she wouldnt just say that to make you feel happy. trust me, she may not feel the same way in a couple of weeks or months but she def feels that way about you now. so dont screw it up by overanalysing!
