To get to the other side?

Yoda Green is partially right. The "Story" of Jesus walking on water is to tell you about how "Faith" works.

As for the "fact" that Jesus walked on water, that is a matter of "Faith.

Do you see how this whole religious thing is: a Riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma riding on the horns of a dilemma surrounded by a quandary.
The problem with Religion (and Philosophy) is that, if you do discover the real answer, it all falls apart.

Peter said Jesus did, but as far as I know Jesus never claimed that ability. Where are you getting your information?

Peter likely told Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; and they wrote it in their journals. They probably wrote it at Peter's insistence. Peter was a little strange.

I guess I don't have to tell you that walking on water would require the suspension of a few natural laws of science.

Same thing goes for floating into heaven without a balloon. Even with a balloon you wouldn't get very far.

Why did Peter sink? He saw Jesus walk on the water and as long as Peter kept his eyes on the LORD, Peter stayed afloat. It was when Peter got his eyes off of the LORD and on to the waves beneath him that he sank. The lesson for the believer here is that our faith must be rooted in Christ and we must not allow ourselves to be distracted by life's circumstances. Doubt is not the absence of faith it is a test of faith. Peter had faith to step out but he did not count the cost and he "looked down." It was only then that Peter began to falter and sink. Yet, the hand of grace pulled Peter to safety.

Because we all can, and he was just reminding us. Ever seen Chris Angel? He walks on water, flies, gets cut in half... all these things we can all do, but we just don't because we don't train ourselves hard enough to believe we can...
