If you live in a big city, where there is work for actors, the following answers apply.
First, find out if there is an agency in town that specializes in hiring film extras. If there is, you can often send them a regular snapshot of your face, and some personal information. You may get calls sooner than you think. This pays a bit, often involves a free lunch, and lets you find out what it's like to work on a movie set.
Auditions for community theater productions are often listed in newspapers or on local news online pages.
Auditions for more professional theater may be harder to find, in some cases. In Chicago, you can use Performink. It's online.
You will need a professional headshot. This generally costs a few hundred dollars.
You should strongly consider taking acting classes. The teacher, in many cases, can answer questions about the acting scene in your city.
If you don't live in a city, you may have to get to one.
Don't fall for bogus classified ads that say, "Actors and Models Needed."

You get headshots, look up agencies addresses and start mailing. If you have anything to go on a resume, make one and send it with the headshot as well as a cover letter. Be prepared for a lot of rejection letters.
You can also go to open calls.
