now. we started our lab puppy in training class around 3-4 months, and he has done really well.
so, when i say now, i mean he is ready whenever you are to start training classes.
our pup is graduating on sunday!!! yeah! he is sooo smart.

we took him to PetSmart for their puppy classes.
i have to say that the classes are awesome, but only for a few reasons.....
1-we got an awesome trainer. i don't know what qualifications trainers at all petsmarts need to have, though.
2-we work with him ALL the time. you HAVE to have the mindset that this will work and you will work with your dog all the time.

sawyer is a great dog on his own, but if it wasn't for us being really consistent with his training..well, we probably wouldn't be graduating!

what he learned there:
-focus
-sit
-down (lay down)
-stay-close, far away, short and long.
-come
-wait
-leave it
-drop it
-puppy push-ups (combination of sit and down, about 3 times in a row)
-take it
-good manners. now, if he sees another dog and wants to play he has to sit and stay until we ask the other owner permission. then, if the other owner says it's o.k. we release his stay and let him meet the other dog. he does the same when meeting humans, like kids on the street, but we never release him from his stay.

oh, and the best part!!! our trainer helped us with proper walking and helped fit sawyer for a no-pull harness. it is the best harness ever and when we go for walks he is no longer pulling me down the street! our trainer said he's the biggest lab she's ever seen. 6 months and he's already 67 pounds!
the cool thing about the harness--he likes it too! when he sees it he knows he's going for a walk and steps right into it....

i am a HUGE fan of puppy classes!

have fun and take care.

oh, and the price is pretty reasonable too!

Start training now. Puppies soak up everything at this age and if you delay things, you're just storing up problems for yourself as the pup will become set in his ways. Gentle training is the best way to go, remembering that puppies of this age only have the attention span of a two-year-old toddler so don't be too hard on him if he doesn't learn things immediately.

You can start now. Get a good book form the library and teach your pup basic commands like sit, stay and come.I find cut up frozen chicken weiners are a good training aid. When your dog does something right give him lots of praise and a piece of weiner.

You start early, that way they know. The older they get the harder it is.

We got our black lab at 8 weeks and started that very day.

Right now is the best time to start training. It's always best to start when they're young, thats when they learn more their minds are like sponges so they absorb alot, it's like a toddler.

Don't delay start today.
Pups are easier to train
while they are young.
Kindness and love are
very important for your
lab. Take things slow
don't rush your training.

ASAP. Puppies should start training as soon as you get them. Believe it or not they are capable of learning basic obedience as early as 6 weeks!

Now, and to Kevin R, how does one train a day old puppy. when they can't see or hear, they don't even move that far from mom.
