In the late 1700s some people wanted democratic rule. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved that the king ruled by God's will.
In the mid 1800s some people wanted to end slavery. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved that God approved of slavery.
In the early 1900s some people wanted to give women the vote. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved that God made women inferior to men.
In the mid 1900s some people wanted to end segregation. Conservative elements of the church pointed to the Bible and said it proved God wanted to keep the races separate.

When you look back at how your parents and grandparents dealt with these things, are you ashamed or proud?
Now some people want to allow gay marriage. Conservative elements of the church are pointing to the Bible and saying it proves God hates homosexuality.
When your children and grandchildren look back at how you deal with this, will they be ashamed or proud?

TRUE TRUE TRUE....When people in the future look back to how we treated homosexuals and our thoughts about stem cell research, ect. They are going to thing...wow..."What were they thinking". In the end progressives are usually proven right.

My answer is probably going to be very unpopular, but:
The Bible DOES talk about the divine right of kings, so I can see their point. If Jesus could live under the Romans, we could live under the British. Some would argue that the king had given up his divine right by treating his subjects so badly, so I can see that point too.
Slavery is Biblical. Not the way it was done here - slaves must be treated well, and I think it is very wrong to enslave an entire race just based on their race. I think it is better to choose freedom, as Paul attempted to get for Philemon.
I can see the point of not giving women the vote (and I'm a woman). I can understand the idea of the fear that it would disrupt the family. I don't think that one thing has, but it among many many other things has. So maybe it wasn't such a good idea...
I'm not all that familiar with which passages were used to justify segregation, so I won't speak to that.
I would hope that my children and grandchildren are proud that I stood up for Biblical morality.

If you want to learn, stop concering yourself with whether or not Bible thumpers are supporting a cause, and stop concernng yourself with historical trends in deciding issues are loosely similar to those we are dealing with now.
Start concerning yourself with, what is the right position for this issue, and why, and what are the arguments of the *sane* people who are on the other side of the issue.
That's where the interesting discussion is.
If your issue is with the idea that it looks like conservative elements are always in the wrong, well, you're giving biased examples. You're looking specifically the things about which they were wrong.

If conservative elements point at the bible and say that proves that murder is wrong, what does that indicate?
I'm not disagreeing with what you are trying to say about gay marriage, I just think your logic is flawed.

The Bible is a very long book. If you look hard enough, you can find a verse to support or bash just about anything. People have been using, and misusing, religion and religious symbols for their own means for a long time.

I don't know where you are coming from here.Your didactic statements require more adjustment to be accurate for an appropriate answer. But if you keep going down the street you are on you will be at the end of a blind alley of your own choosing.http://www.carm.org/doctrine/100truths.htm

There are at least two histories, and we learn from them both. But the power-mad rule because they have the money AND because most people don't know that they themselves are God who can stop the leaders in their tracks if they wanted to

They'll be laughing too hard about the whole 'Intelligent Design' fiasco to feel pride or shame about the gay marriage stuff.
