The food will be fully digested by the morning. In a simplified scenario any additional calories in ingest that you don't use in a day gets turned to fat for storage. People running marathons or know they'll have a long day can do this because they know they won't be able to eat to get the next days needed calories. But it's not really recommended if you know you'll have the time to eat after your workout.
The best thing as people have said is to eat in the mornings. Many people I know however don't like to eat in the mornings before working out (because of the way it makes them feel or the lack of time). They've all ended up drinking gatorade, juice, or milk. But any of those can still upset your stomach before you work out. What I recommend is as soon as you get up drink something with calories then take your time and brusch your teeth and change into your workout clothes. The additional few minutes can help your stomach "calm" down. Also warm up the drink. Your body has to first get the drink to body temperature before it can use it. If it's been in the fridge just put it in the microwave for 30 secs...even the juice .

Anything you eat before bed is only going to make you fat and any energy will be long gone by the time you wake up. Eat a couple of cereal or power bars and a big glass of water in the morning a few minutes before you start exercising

I would recommend a good break fast that is high in vitamins, protein and carbs. like vector cereal cuz its fast to eat some orange juice. Ovaltine also gives me lots of energy in the morning. When I eat those things I feel better, stronger and more energetic. Also try to wake up 2 hours before your workout, your energy will be higher.
This is something I personally do its it works great.

I would think that even if you eat something really good at night it would be digested by the time you wake up. I think it is more important what you eat in the morning. Bananas w/ toast & peanut butter is good b/c of the potassium & protein. Sometimes in the morning food isn't appealing to me right away. So when I feel like that I work out first & then make sure I eat something right afterwards.

It's not good to eat before you go to bed. Your body is going to use energy to digest it. Eat a something light before you work out.

no carbs before you go to bed, just protein. carbs will turn into fat while you sleep. And then you should eat some carbs in the monring, before you workout. Something small though, so you aren't too full.
