That they are confusing prayer with worship.

If another Christian asked you to pray for them, you do that, don't you.

We are asking saints, holy and devout Christians, to pray for us, just as you asked the fellow Christian to pray for you. Who better to pray for us than those in the presence of Jesus.

The Bible states that prayers of the faithful are brought before the Lord in Rev.8:3 "Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne." Prayers of the Holy Ones brought before the Lord...

So what are the prayers of the Holy Ones to you?

--is Catholic--

I tell them that I am praying to a person not a piece of shaped metal or carved wood. St. X is quite alive and well in heaven right now, thank you very much. If you have no need to reach out to experienced Christians, Christians who have made it to heaven, that is your prerogative, and congregations on being so holy that you do not need help.

From there on I explain why the Protestant notion that we cannot pray to the saints because they cannot hear us is based on Aristotelian metaphysics and not anything found in the bible. I then point that every time they say "I believe... in the communion of saints" in the Apostles Creed, they are affirming that you can pray to the dead...because well that is what that sentence means.

From there, I start to talk about REAL pagan idol worship and what that is. I also contrast that with the Pagan/Protestant notion of what happens to dead people vs. the scriptural understanding of the Body of Christ and how Catholics hold to that in their lives by being in communion with those that have passed beyond the veil of this world.
