They are very smart at hunting and tracking, but other than that they are pretty dumb. All of their brain cells seem to be directly connected to their noses!

I had a friend who did train his Basset to jump and fetch and heel, but it took him about six times longer than a normal dog.

As with all hounds, basset hounds are not dumb at all. Hounds have the ability to be trained to perform a multitude of task. Bassets were bread to be hunting dogs. As for energy... well maybe they are lazy... but who cares.

No breed is smarter or dumber than others. Just the different breeds were made to do different jobs. So if a border collie, which is bred to herd sheep and such, is asked to to a search and rescue, it will take longer to train than say a bloodhound, which is bred for scent jobs. Is a blond dumber than a brunette?

I'm caught between defining it as stupidity or stubborness... every now and then my basset will do something so stupid I know she's completely brain dead, but ten minutes later she'll behave perfectly and follow every command I give. I think its like schizophrenia

well, they are ranked 71 on the dog intelligence chart.

but I am sure with the right owner and training they would exceed that standard.
