Yo can give fish oil and vitamin E... fish oil 1000mg gelcaps 2x daily with food, vitamin E is 100IU per 25lb body weight per with food, ideally divided into two sets. For example a 40lb dog would get 200IU vit E and 1000mg fish oil in the morning and 200IU vit E and 1000 mg fish oil in the evening. Make sure you give them both. Make sure the fish oil is fish body oil and not fish liver oil. You can just use the human stuff. They also make 3V caps which are fish oil supplements with the vitamin E already in it.. you can ask your vet for them.

Also, get him on a good quality food such as Wellness, Innova, Eagle Pack, Canidae... grocery store food as well as pet chain stores are not quality foods, they contain more grain than meat and use harsh preservatives and by-prouducts.

You want you food to list meat as the main four ingredients and certainly the number one... stay away from white rice and flour, look for one with whole wheat. Your best bet it to buy the food at a feed store.

Do not give your dog vegetable oil, ever. Yes, brushing helps too. Dry flaking skin and excessive shedding is not normal. Dogs blow their coat and this only occurs for a week or two, other than that they should not be constantly losing hair. Most dogs have dry dull hair and do shed a lot, they may also be extra itchy... supplementing dogs is a wonderful thing to do just make sure you know what to give and what not to give dont just start giving them multi vitamins or anything.

Vitamins may help a bit, but be careful you don't overdo it. High levels of Vitamin E and other fat soluble vitamins can be toxic.

Make sure you get a nutritionally complete food that does NOT have "by products" in the ingredients list or you'll be paying a lot of money for garbage. Personally, I like Nutro - it has no by products and is reasonably priced and my dogs have done fine on it for more than 10 years. They make canned and dry dog foods for puppies and adults. Any changes in diet should be made slowly to avoid diarrhea - gradually mix more new food in with what you've been using until he's switched over.

My friend feeds her labs Canidae (www.canidae.com) and they look great! Less shedding than you'd expect from a Lab.

Short haired dogs will shed a lot all year round. Have your vet check for intestinal worms - they can cause excessive shedding. Don't bathe him too often - no more than once every four months unless he's rolled in something. When you do, use cool water. Warm or hot water baths make them shed more. Also, get shedding blade from the pet store - it's a mini version of the kind they use on horses. That will take out a lot of the loose hair. Other than that, get a Dyson vacuum!

I feed a dog food called Canidae. He's only a pup but my vet said that this will cause him to shed much less than normal.

The Shelter I adopted him from has had him on this since he was weened from his mother. It is a VERY good dry food. you should read about it at...

I think you will be impressed with some of the comments from people who feed this to their 4 legged friends. They also make a cat food called felidae which I have now switched to for my 3 cats.

It is normal for dog to shed, I read somewhere that it is about 1000/day is normal. However, shedding could be caused by skin infection, the symptoms are scratching, and flaky skin. Omega 3 supplement to enhance coat's health.

This is a tough one but I suggest you consult a veteranarian before you give your dog any kind of medication. It is the safest thing to do for your dog. Sheding though is a natural thing for dogs in the summer. To help him try cooling him off with water and make sure to brush him everyday. Good luck!!!!!

Yes. Vitamin E is essential. This doesn't mean it will completely stop but it will shed less.
