I agree with Legend. That is a fantastic idea. They could be unique (like social security numbers) that way we would have a way to track vehicles. Maybe it would cut down on stolen vehicles. I bet we could even make a law that says it is illegal to remove them!

The vehicle VIN tells the story of the birth of that vehicle.
It's coded by #'s and letters.
It shows what car co, what plant, what year model, make, etc.
It also helps law enforcement determined if someone switched the VIN plate to a stolen car, if the info doesn't match the car. All US cars since the mid to late 70's should have a 17 digit VIN.

Ther is no such thing as a VIN 'number'. This is a Vehicle Identification Number. It has been seventeen digits long on every car sold in the US since 1981 and should be visible on the dash and/or the driver side lock pillar or door.

VIN: Vehicle Identification Number, 17 digit letters & numbers on small metal plate usually on the dash board near the bottom of the windshield or on the inside of the door jamb. Also listed on you vehicle registration and title. Not sure exactly what you are asking? I hope this information helps.

A thin metal sheet of letters and numbers on the dashboard on the drivers side. Look on outside of car for it. It is at bottom of dash.

Look for a long number usually high up on your dashboard. There's letters and numbers in it and it's usually on a thin metal sheet. Every car has one.
