Egg - as the question never states what type of egg and all so on a Darwinian level something that was NOT a chicken MUST have layed the first egg that was a chicken again answer EGG.

egg

amphibians evolved before birds (amphibians have eggs)

reptiles came around after amphibians, but before birds (reptiles, like birds, have amniotic eggs). Amniotic eggs allow for depositing eggs on dry land while keeping the embryo in a controlled environment.

Chickens were not the first bird to evolve. They evolved from another bird who laid an egg that happened to have evolved genetic material inside of it to produce a 'chicken'.

The chicken was not first hatched as a different type of bird and then magically evolved later in it's life time...its genes were already pre determined to develop into a 'chicken' while still inside it's egg.

(this is greatly simplifying the loooooong process of evolution, but the end result is the chicken had to have come from an egg)

I seen a greeting card that answered this very question..

On the side of the bed sat a disgruntled chicken with it's arms folded.. In the bed lay a laid back egg smoking a cigarette..

Underneath the caption read -

That settles that old argument!!

The chicken. On the fifth day, God created the animals, particularly the ones that lived in the ocean and "every winged fowl" (Genesis 1:21).Then, in verse 22, God said for them to "be fruitful and multiply...and let fowl multiply in the earth."
