Its a term of courtesy from the American cultural past when it was appropriate to protect women. It was a man offering a service to a woman, and affirming his commitment to protecting her... its chivalry.

Its also not allowed anymore. Most women are taught that its part of the masculine oppresive movement, meant to cage in and degrade women. If you work at motorolla you can be fired for treating a female coworker with this "archaic" courtesy.

ahhhhhhhhhh

Its a polite and gentlemanly way of allowing a lady to go or come first. the former more so than the latter. As in ordering food at a restaurant, or getting on or off a bus... placing the lady before the man, etc. Generally ladies do not come first in an other context, if so... you will have a happy and satisfied partner.

All "ladies" truly do appreciate chivalry, including being allowed to go first. The people who think we do not want to be shown respect through good manners, were often not taught any while growing up and point to the women's lib movement to keep from having to extend a courtesy. They are often people who curse too, because as well all know, using curse language indicates a lower education level and a lack of ability to express oneself.

Ladies first - means holding the door and letting pass through before you, walking behind us, etc

Interesting question from an interesting part of the world - thanks for posing it.

It means that you should let the women in your bunch of people go first. Like getting on an elevator, opening a door for a lady or your date, simple manners actually.

That ladies go first - isn't it obvious?

Its a term a gentleman would use when opening the door for their lady or allowing them to get on the bus first etc...

I believe it originated back when there were gentlemen around. A gentleman opens a door for a lady and allows her to pass through the door before he walks through, for example.

Everyone mentions the polite, chivilrous meaning. But when the titanic was sinking it took a more serious tone. There weren't enough lifeboats. As the ship was sinking it was "Women and Children first!!" Men were expected to give their lives for the women and children.

"Ladies First" originates from the days of chivalry when men were more gracious to the opposite gender and women were considered frail and only good for decoration.
