Be sure to use a shampoo for dry skin, an extra gentle, moisturizing one. Bathe only once every 2 weeks, unless the dog is really nasty. Put either olive oil or flaxseed oil into food about 2 times a week. My dogs are huge and I give them each 2 tablespoons twice a week-mixed right in the dry food. So adjust the amount to how bid your dog is. I also have used Vit. E capsules. Break open the cap, and rub the Vit. E onto skin, works great. My weimaraner is very prone to dry skin and the Vitamin E on her skin works great. Good Luck.

Usually dry skin is from nutrition. You treat from the inside out. Get a good premium dog food and start feeding that. You can also get some skin capsules, they will have oils in them, and look like a large vitamin E capsule. You can also drizzle their dry food with a little olive oil. What you are needing to do is to put some fat and moisture into their system. After a couple of weeks, you should see a difference

I usually give my dogs fish oils supplements in a treat once per day when they get dry skin. This helps to treat the dry skin from the inside out.

Yo can give fish oil and vitamin E... fish oil 1000mg gelcaps 2x daily with food, vitamin E is 100IU per 25lb body weight per with food, ideally divided into two sets. For example a 40lb dog would get 200IU vit E and 1000mg fish oil in the morning and 200IU vit E and 1000 mg fish oil in the evening. Make sure you give them both. Make sure the fish oil is fish body oil and not fish liver oil. You can just use the human stuff. They also make 3V caps which are fish oil supplements with the vitamin E already in it.. you can ask your vet for them.
Also, get him on a good quality food such as Wellness, Innova, Eagle Pack, Canidae... grocery store food as well as pet chain stores are not quality foods, they contain more grain than meat and use harsh preservatives and by-prouducts.
You want you food to list meat as the main four ingredients and certainly the number one... stay away from white rice and flour, look for one with whole wheat. Your best bet it to buy the food at a feed store.
Do not give your dog vegetable oil, ever. Brushing helps too, it stimulates the natural oils. Dry flaking skin and excessive shedding is not normal. Dogs blow their coat and this only occurs for a week or two, other than that they should not be constantly losing hair. Most dogs have dry dull hair and do shed a lot, they may also be extra itchy... supplementing dogs is a wonderful thing to do just make sure you know what to give and what not to give dont just start giving them multi vitamins or anything.
Gentle baby shampoo is ideal for bathing and do not bath more than once a week.

You shouldn't give him/her bath's as often. Use an all natural shampoo, because some shampoo strips the natural oil from dogs' coats.
If it develops into a serious skin problem, like rashes, and hot spots, then you should take him/her to the vet and get some medicine for it. Also, fish oil brings back some of the oils that are needed.

Your dog may need vitamins. Check out the contents of the food you feed it. Also, there is a very good shampoo, maybe by Hartz, the is made of Oatmeal and baking soda. Oatmeal is as good for the dog's skin as it is for humans. Also, take a look at the materials that the dog lays on. Some dogs can have allergic reactions to some carpets.Let me know if any of this helps. I know of several very good dog care books.

I give my dog 1 capsule of fish oil per day, mixed into her food. Also, when I give her a bath, I use a conditioning rinse after the shampoo. She hates the prolonged bath, but she's much less dry and flaky afterwards.
There are also grooming sprays that you can use between baths to help freshen the coat and condition. Look around at your local pet supply store.

When you feed your dog, pour a little bit of olive oil on the food before you give it to him/her. Also do not bathe your dog too often because this can result in dry skin, but when you do bathe it...make sure that you rinse all of the soap out of its coat or else this can make it itchy.

Add Vitamin E to their food. Give less frequent baths. When you do bath the dog use oatmeal based shampoos.
