So much violence has been ordered and excused in the bible. I find this confusing. I am a Christian, but there are so many questions I have about things like this. We are suppose to turn the other cheek but there is so much fighting that Christians do. Can someone explain?

There is so much violence in the Bible to show you what the effects of sin will do. Sin entered the world through disobedience of Adam and Eve eating the fruit. There is nothing wrong with turning the other cheek if your trying show Gods love
to your oppressor. But if your very existence is in jeopardy God expects you to defend yourself, God wants you to be wise.

Who the hell can explain that ****? It happened1970 years ago. No one alive today was alive then, obviously, so how can anyone explain it? Besides, it's not just christians and catholics that do the fighting. Now days, EVERYONE from every religion is fighting one another. Take Isreal and Lebanon for example. North Korea and the entire world. The US and Iraq. Everyone has a difference in opinion and no one is willing to listen to anyone else's. Violence in the Bible isn't excused by any means. But the Bible is just giving accounts of what happened. It's like watching a war movie based on a real war. That's pretty violent too. And most of those wars, there are still people alive who remember being there.

Well , how many ppl knew about cruelty in bible? Remember till 1611 there was no bible in english ( all world translations started from this)
Ppl not that they could not even read, they had no access to bible. So the whole pritching stories were from priest and pastors.
Of cause any priest will hide all those violences and will interpret the way they want.

Its only wiht last few centuries and specialy internet ppl get access to all kinds information and can realise what was hiden from them.
The most violent book ever was produced is a bible and we suposed to teach our childrens based on this book.

Violence is not excused in the whole bible. Examples of what is sin and isn't is shown. God wants people to understand that sin brings death. Also, the Lord says that their is a time for War and Peace. People who aren't dealing rightly with others will sometimes wage war and God while he does not condone killing does not begrudge individuals to defend themselves when it is their life at stake at the hands of wrong acting people. Turning the other cheek does not mean to become a door mat or punching bag for others. It means that we need to seek peace when at all possible but to stand up for ourselves when it becomes necessary.

I understand what you mean and I have struggled with the same question...
I think that we are supposed to be nice to people and turn the other cheek and all that but when God sees that there is going to be a time where we need to fight so He raises up people that will be able to lead so that everything comes out as it should...

Fighting for our beliefs, which does escalate into war and brutality. And the Bible is just chronicling what was going on at that time, but not necessarily saying whether it was right or wrong.

Times were very violent in the ancient days. Being the good book doesnt mean everything in it is positive. I understand what you mean. But look at history..........Christians have been some of the most violent hateful people on our planet! All in the name of Jesus. I think he would puke if he knew what some people do in his name!
WOW Marillita.....you live in a scary world! Glad Im not a Christian in your world!
Alli.......christians were not fighting to keep their beliefs........re. the
Crusades ....they were fighting and killing those who didnt accept christianity. They were shoving it down people throats and killing them if they didnt' convert! Lets stick with reality!

It is the HOLY WORD of GOD. He can not look on sin without Burning or destroying it in some other perfect way. I would invite you to read it from that point of view and see that my statement holds true.

After Christ was crucified for our sins and resurrected by the power of God the Father, He(Jesus Christ) ascended back to the Father and is sitting on the right hand of Power making intercession for us to the Father. God's Wrath is being gathered in vials and will be poured out on earth to destroy the earth and all that remain.

The Bible is a (divine) history book. War is a part of history. Unfortunately.
