If you really truly want to have him be an indoor kitty, there are a couple of things you can do to 'train' him to stop crying at the door when you leave.
1) put a few coins in a small coffee can with the lid on it and shake it every time kitty goes to the door.
2) get a spray bottle, fill it with tap water and spray at kitty when he comes towards the door. (Keep the spray on mist, please)
If you are consistent with either of these methods, kitty will eventually 'get it' - he's not gonna get to go out.
However, every once in while he'll still test ya!
Good luck!

My cat is an indoor cat, but yes wants outside whenever she can, so when I'm outside I let her come out for a bit, but I'm right on her so she doesn't run to a tree. Being the cat is 5 months, you may be able to teach him that he goes out when you do and comes in when you do, I wouldn't do this at night though unless you have a fenced yard, my cat is scared of every noise but loves to go out, so we do in the day.

I had this problem too, we had a kitten who would do anything to go outside (like shred the carpet and doors) so we would have to let her out every night and she would hunt for Little things and come home in the morning except, for one morning she didn't come home we waited, and waited but she has never come home and its been about a month. She was probably eaten by a wild dog. Even though it was hard to contain her i wish we could have but she just lived for going outside to hunt. At least she was having fun! We have an old indoor cat too who has never really wanted to go outside. I can suggest to only let your baby outside while your re watching him and good luck! It is probably a Good thing that he is micro-chipped, but still it can leave you heartbroken.

keep him inside if you let him out once he will want out again and eventually you will lose the battle and you will have an outdoor indoor cat. try getting him some interactive toys or catnip maybe he is just a little bored. I have a cat that i made that mistake with and he eventually got to the point he would piss on the floor in front of me to get me to let him put again he won that battle and i have not made that mistake again. indoor or outdoor your call but remember he will want out again and may roam to far and end up in someone Else's living room window.
IF YOU PUT A COLLAR ON HIM AND LET HIM GO OUT MAKE SURE IT IS A BREAK AWAY COLLAR.. you do not want kitty accidentally hanging himself in a tree.

if you don't feel comfortable just letting him go, then take about a 30 minute moment of time this evening or whenever you can spare it and let him out, go with him. just keep an eye on him. thats what i do with my 6 yr old neutered male. he's so scared to be out alone but he wants to go out. there are also these things that i believe you can get from petsmart or petco they're mesh fabric that you stake to the ground and they come in tunnels, or a 2 tiered thing that they can lay in....this allows them to be outside with the safety of being contained. they piece together, so you can connect the tunnels to the canopy and wind them all over the yard.

you could supervise and make sure that he doesn't go far, you can also buy a long leash and attach it to something and let him by himself or else you could build a fence around your yard or just a little playpen. But I don't think you should just let him roam free, becuase even if he does have a microchip, he could get lost or run over and you wouldn't want to live without him probably.

I don't know where you live (urban, suburban, rural), but I'd stress keeping him indoors if you can. Indoor cats typically live longer and are healthier, and you don't have to deal with things like fleas and ticks. Not only can cats who go outdoors get hit by cars, they often get into fights with other cats and other animals. And you'll worry if he doesn't come back, or he comes back hurt. Of course he instinctively wants to go outside, but stand your ground and make him an indoor-only cat.

have you thought of a kitty harness and a leash? they are not expensive, like $5.00 each at petco or petsmart and they allow the cat to be outside, but for you to remain in control of them during that time, so no unwanted visits from the fire dept to get it outta a tree, or no "missing" posters around the neighborhood when something frightens her into a speedy run out of the yard!

I have a cat that goes outside all the time, they love the fresh air, and the sunshine, the plus side, is that after awhile, my cat stopped using the litterbox, and now goes to the door like a dog when he had to go...it's awesome. Beware of other cats outside, they like to fight.
