if you didn't tip her don't go back. please be too embarrassed to go back.
now , if you live in a fairly small area, you really screwed yourself out of a great stylist because everyone in town will know how cheap you are and not give you their best service.
you should have known how much the service was going to cost before you went to get it done. there should not have been any surprise in the cost.
owners do get tipped if they WORK for it. only if the salon owner does not service you do you not tip her/him.

A good rule of thumb for tipping in a beauty salon is 15% of the total cost. Of course, how satisfied you are should be a factor as well. Remember that the estheticians work mostly on commission. If you spent 85$ for a haircut, chances are you were at a high quality salon, and those types of salons generally attract the best stylists, so they should be tipped accordingly. An exception to this rule is if you are a regular customer of that stylist. Stylists don't usually mind if thier regular customers tip less because the stylist knows he/she can count on that customer to come back every month.

Yes, just like waitstaff, hairstylists depend on tips for most of their wages. Standard is 15% but I usually just give $10-15 depending on how much I had done. Plus, if you keep your stylist happy you're more likely to get "good" appointments (she'll stay late to do your hair, etc). If the stylist is the OWNER of the shop then they do not get a tip.

yes you should tip your stylist. I think the suggested tip rate is either 15% or 20%. If you cannot afford it don't feel bad. But if you can it is just a lovely jesture to show you appreciate their hard work. And by the way, never give someone a tip if they have been nasty to you or did not do your hair or nails to your liking.

Yeah, I don't tip more than $5, and it only costs me $25. So $30 total. I guess if you spend $85, a $10 buck tip is more than enough.

yeah, hair stylists are some of the most talented people--you know behind every good haircut is a good hair stylist-- so yeah i tip. it makes as much sense, if not more, than tipping a waitress.

$85 unless you got a perm, color, and haircut, I think you got ripped off. I normally tip $5.00 for a haircut and style.

Depends if she did a good job or not. If she butchered it, forget it but if you're statified, then give a nice tip. However, $85 is a little steep unless it's highlights or color.

Most certainly! 10%
Hairstylists usually have a lot of expenses that you don't see, like chair rental (space in the salon) tools and all the products they use. Their percent or hourly rate isn't that great without tips.
