I think that Romeo and Juliet are not supposed to be "real" characters, but concepts. The entire story makes us idealize love AND lust and makes us examine unanswerable questions like Do you believe in love at first sight? and Would you die for Love? You can interpret Shakespeare a million different ways. Have fun with that - good question!
