The fact that christians, and less offensive religious sects are so ignorant really bothers me as a scientist, and offends me as a person. But is there any hope in helping them or should we just let them swim in their stupidity and laugh from the sidelines?

Sorry, you seem to be taking a beating with this question, but if it helps I'm with you. Right here in the minority, where I usually am. I fear it may be to late to educate, and I think this whole thing will end the same way it started, with a big bang. And it's the undereducated ones that are fueling the fire (so to speak). But wouldn't you just love to come back and tell them "I told you so." We have freedom of religion but what most don't understand is that also encompasses freedom from religion. But the minority usually loses, alas, even though that is what the founding fathers were pointing out. The majority is protected by their shear numbers, it is the minority that needs the protection. So the Christians throw a fit when you tell them to keep their religion in their church and not in the public view b/c they feel everyone should think as they do. Peace

I have seen while on this site, that even when you confront Christians with their own logic, they deny it. It is like putting your head in the sand, and their head is so far up there that they can't see anything, and need a priest to tell them what the world looks like. I have found that rational thought is no good on them, but I sometimes try anyway. I still say you can have fun with them, and only get serious when you have someone questioning the religion, and you can help them. Don't try to help them. Look at what they believe. They only need blind faith, and all that is: believe what the book says, with no fact or evidence, and no matter what proof comes against it, believe. They are so gullible, that you can not use thought on them. You must be soo weak minded to be religious that reason is beyond them. They have to want to be saved from religion, and that may not be enough.

Do us a favor and don't, we are very sure of what we believe , and many of us have a strong faith that has lasted many years with no problems and it would be a stupid idea to one day stop believing in God and believe in something with no positive or influential purpose in our lives.

Do the world a favor and if you have intelligence for science do positive and productive things in life that can better the society, don't waste your time on doing something that in the end all you are doing is ruining lives that were already fine in the beginning and really didn't need your help.

And start to learn how to have tolerance and love for others. Atheism may have all the possible answers of the beginning of live but it doesn't shows you how to care, love and accept others, wich is something that people lack here. Love others who are different from you and be happy for those who believe that they have a God who is responsible for their purpose in life. If that's what you believe then fine, but use your energy and brain to contribute good things in society. Not by hating, bashing and promoting violence.

Making fun of others shows lack of understanding, education and yes.......ignorance. This world is full of different cultures and believes that I may find a little crazy, but if it makes them happy, then I respect them, and the worst thing to do is mock their beliefs which was caused by not getting educated.

I think we need to help them.

I am shocked every day when I read questions like "If ppl came from monkies, y r there still monkies?!?!?"

I'm also amazed to see how many people simply do not understand the definition of the word "theory." They seem to think that it is synonymous with "wild guess."

I blame the fact that many schools do not do all they can to teach critical thinking skills. Now, I'm not quite sure how to fix this situation, other than imploring any teachers (science and others) to get kids into the habit of questioning things.

If we don't overcome this obstacle we will find ourselves in a future where our children simply cannot compete in the global marketplace with people who have been taught to (and I hate this term) "think outside the box."

We should be approaching an age of reason, not backsliding into the dark ages.

Are we stupid because we don't believe as you do? We believe what we believe through faith. That is all the "proof" we need but it does not make us stupid.
The existence of God cannot be proven in a laboratory or through the complicated mechanisms of logic. Neither can love, nor beauty, nor happiness, but that does not mean they are not real. In the same way, just because you cannot "prove" that God exists as you can prove a chemical formula, it does not mean that He is not real. It only means you are using the wrong tools.

Faith is not anti-intellectual. Some of the finest scientists are men and women with a deep faith in God, because they realize that science alone cannot explain where we came from or why we are here. They are convinced that science itself points to an all-wise and all-powerful Creator. As the Bible says, 'The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands' (Psalm 19:1)."

I think using the word education implies a person's desire to know something they otherwise would not. And, that is a choice. We all have a something called freewill. And, that should be respected. Information and beliefs of many things, not just God are all around us. It's our personal choice as to whether or not we will subscribe to a certain belief. Atheist can do whatever they choose--it doesn't hinder my spiritual experience. IMHO too much time is spent worrying about other people's spiritual well being, and not enough time spent practicing our own.

Well we have few options.
1st is to help them to educate them self.
2nd. Like they did before to non-belivers we just should wipe them out the same way they love to justify every murder in the bible. May be than they will understand thier own religion from inside out.

Christianity is falling on daily bases mroe and more. It's just a matter of time . But if we will leave them alone they will try to revert back inot dark ages and that we can't allow.
Thier lovely Christian local GOD J.Bush already trows country into dark ages with his idiotic stemp cell veto. TOmorrow he will do even worst. We already have history examples. We don't need to guess what will happened.
( tough i like Bush, if was not Christian he may be ok)

Science is based on the observation that the universe is governed by natural laws that can be tested and replicated through experiment and is used as a reliable and rational basis for prediction and engineering. Like a scientist, a scientific skeptic aims to decide claims based on verifiability and falsifiability rather than accepting claims on faith or relying on unfalsifiable categories, by utilizing critical thinking. (Opposite of what is known as the true-believer syndrome.) < from Wikipedia. from me> Its to hard to change the mind of people who were told to fear god, no matter what, it won't change. I just can't believe that some people don't realize that its just a great story book (the bible) with common sense of what people were like back then creating some kind of god to have laws and rules just like today, and in the future. Religion is what causes war. Nothing can be proved but science and thats what those idiot so called believers use to kill each other.(guns bombs lasers etc.)
BELIEVE THAT

Laugh at their foolishness I am not sure weather to laugh or to cry, because it really is sad. Is their a way to educate them, well most atheists want proof, where as we believe without seeing, we need no proof. Why should they offend you if this is what they believe it should not offend you, it is their choice to believe as they believe. Face it if you realize the hypocrisy within most religions, You'd say they do not even follow what they say and this is christians, muslims. hindus, whatever. Realize this and search for the truth, and try and live by his words

Ignorance is bliss

The problem is that because religion is opinion based, you cannot "educate" someone by insisting your opinion is right. YES we should educate them of Geology, Anthropology...science in general to explain things. Then let them decide for themselves how that applies to the universe.

Science has no explanation yet for so many things. If we cannot find a natural answer, then the answer becomes supernatural.
