They cut to:
•Ease tension
•Relieve anger
•Escape numbness
•Express emotional pain
•Punish themselves
•Escape from emptiness and depression
•Provide relief
•Prevent suicide
This is something very difficult to understand unless you've been there before. Cutters aren't always seeking attention. In fact, most don't want to talk about it---and most will do whatever it takes to hide the marks on their body. It doesn't make them crazy, retarded or psychotic. This is how they cope with the difficulties in life.

My sister in law says the physical pain takes away her mental pain. I do not get it. I've been depressed. If you need to feel pain then at least get a tattoo. It's a lot better than the scars I've seen on some cutters!

There are all sorts fo reasons. It could be because they arent feeling anything emotionaly and cutting helps them feel something. It can also work in the same way as an eating disorder as its a way to control something when there doesnt seem to be anything else they can control. They may also be so overwhelmed with emotion that cutting seems to "center" it all and make it controlable. There are also a lot of teenagers (especially girls) who cut for attention (usually goes along with borderline personality disorder) or they cut because they dont know how to express what they are feeling.

i began reducing while i exchange into 14, i'm 27 now and don't do it as much as I used to, yet incidents nonetheless take place. no person knew I cut back till I have been given right into an prolonged term dating in my 20s, so it truthfully wasn't for interest. I went to massive lengths to conceal the cuts and scars. i be attentive to some human beings DO cut back for interest, yet that merely ability they choose help and don't be attentive to how or the place to invite for it. For me, reducing exchange into the thank you to regulate thoughts and soreness while each and everything exterior of me felt uncontrolled. i've got been clinically determined with an interwoven chain of psychological issues (Tourette's, OCD, borderline, rigidity, social phobia) that are all appropriate, and various cases i exchange into remoted and merely did no longer be attentive to the thank you to look after all the overpowering thoughts. via pinpointing them right into a actual soreness which I controlled, I felt i exchange into waiting to a manner or the different grasp the rigidity and thoughts into some thing bearable, on account that actual soreness is a lot less complicated to look after than emotional. there's a clean cut back reason and reaction, all of it is clever. this way of dealing with rigidity grew to alter right into a self-unfavorable compulsion, it quite is person-friendly with Tourette's and OCD, a repeated behaviour that reduces rigidity from a thoroughly unrelated reason.
