MOM, when the room is clean, I can't find anything anymore!

I warn them about cleaning their rooms -- if they do not do it, then I do a mass cleaning of the room when they are at summer camp -- and it is DEFINITELY Clean then and things are thrown out that I, the parent, deem needs to be tossed. Then I DO The cleaning (and have found some things that they were restricted for at times too -- so no secrets in MY HOME!) If it is on the floor, tossed on the side, or not where it SHOULD be -- it is GONE gone gone.

Oh everything in the book, from"My nose hurts SOOOO bad" to "I had gym and TWO recesses. I am so, so tired". Those are the younger ones. My 17 y.old: "I have to be in my zone to do that and today I am not in my zone"
I have a great system, though. Each child has an allowance at the beginning of each month, (their age x 2). I give 2 free warnings when deadlines have been passed. Third one, I say nothing, but deduct $2-$5 per day, depending on the amt. of allowance they get. When payday comes, it's always interesting to see their shock when they have been deducted for things throughout the month. (Real world baby: no work, no pay) If words/phrases are heard that are against our house rules, I silently deduct $1, and record in the ledger what was said.
I also use my camera phone to prove things were/weren't done on time. That way, there's no arguement of the facts.
I sometimes give choices: Will you be cleaning your room, or pay me to do it?
Cuts out arguing and crying and all the drama that comes with the words "Clean your room". As a single mom. This took me about 4 years to fine tune. It works great.
The key is stay even toned, not angry, just matter of fact. Kids actually respond to this system better than any other method I have tried. We get along better, because we're not fighting over these issues, too.
Good luck!
(PS...Another tip: If allowance isn't an incentive, I will say, "I hope I have enough energy to (go to the pool). This is alot of mess for one person to handle alone...")

For my son, his excuse is, "It's too hard". He says there is so much stuff that he gets too frustrated and it makes it too hard for him to clean his room.

I've heard them all "I did! " (it's a mess with a path to the bed). My knees hurt, I'm saving it to do later, I'm too bored to, I need to look for -------------- first,

And she is only 8.
