I find this to be really stupid because if you would call it, it would still be called as 'Indian' Airlines. Can anyone let me know why was this done?

They were trying to be "cool" and trying to change their image. They thought by changing the name they could maybe give it a better image in peoples' eyes. I don't know if you noticed, but they also changed the logo. By just calling it "Indian" it does sound stupid, because people will add airlines anyway. How does "Indian" make any sense?? But then again... this is India... What does make sense here when it comes to politics!!!

re-branding exercise will clearly show the link that exists between IA and the fleet of A-319 aircraft that is being operated.

The number of routes on which the new flying experience will be available will go up steadily as the aircraft will be arriving in three batches. Apart from the set arrived in Dec2005, the airline plans to induct two A-319 aircraft each in 2006. The airline plans to operate the A-319 on a variety of routes including flying them to some cities that are currently being served by Boeing aircraft.

changing name from Indian Airlines to Indian is very odd ..and really don't make any sense...
and for next many yrs there are no plans to merge it with Air India in any case..

It was part of it's new brand image which include an order for 43 brand new airbus planes. Indian was feeling the pressure to get newer planes because they had alot of Boeing 737-200s and Airbus A300's as well as early A320's. While competition had 737NG's and newer A320's.

Indian(IC) may or may not be merging with rival Air India.

Regards.
