Our marriage was in front of a judge when I was four months pregnant and a little less than glamorus. We are coming up on five years and I want a 'wedding'. I don't want the gifts and stuff but I want to feel like I am really getting married. My big questions is if it is appropriate to do it at 5 years or should I wait? Second is do I have to do it on my anniversery? What is the protocol for this kind of thing? Our five year is 10/25/07 and I want plenty of time to get it right...

DO it how ever you want! If the day lands durning the week, do it that weekend. Honestly whose really going to care? Its your day.

I suggest you plan a reception party and have someone officate the renewal of vows. If you go to church or temple or whatever religon you are, ask your clergy person for suggestions. I know my minister would do it for free since we are belong to the church.

Plan it as you want it. There really isn't an "standard" like the traditional weddings.

Have fun! I'm looking to do something simular for my 10 year anny.

5 years is certainly an appropriate time to do a vow renewal - they tend to happen on the big anniversaries - ie. 5, 10, 25, 50. You definitely have the right idea of starting to plan early because a vow renewal can take just as long to plan as a first time wedding. It doesn't have to be exactly on your wedding day (especially if it falls mid week and you want to throw it on the weekend) but it should be as close to the actual date as possible.

You can renew your vows anytime. Most people that have renewed there vows did it around there anniversery. I know a few people that got married in front of the judge and had a big wedding later on. One stated "No Gifts Please" and another stated "NO Gifts Please, but Gift Certificate to Home Depot" on the invitations. I just think it is rude to ask for gifts or gift certificates when you are already married.

Any time is fine to renew vows. My husband and I did on our 3rd wedding anniversary, see i didn't have a real wedding either and the maid of honour i picked got really sick so i had to find a replacement and her husband was to be the bestman, so that left us with needing replacement for both.
So 3 yrs later we flew to Nashville Tenn and renewed our vows in a beautiful little chapel. With the maid of honour and bestman that was originally supposed to be in our wedding. It was one of the greatest days in my life. I say go for it. You will not regret it.

Go for it, you can do it on your anniversary if you want, but you don't have to. How nice, every girl should have a wedding. Pretty much whatever you want to do is appropriate, good luck.
