Hi there--I just got a chow mix mutt whose 2 years old. recently my husband and I have been noticing these teeny tiny black worms (dead ones) on the inside of the towel we keep in her crate. I spied some on our couch, too. She isn't itching a lot or anything so I know they're not fleas, but what are they, and how do we get rid of them? Help! We have cats in our house, too and we're wondering how to prevent our cats from getting them also!

There are four other types of worms that live in the intestines and make dogs and cats sick. The most common is the roundworm. Most puppies and kittens have roundworms. Pets with roundworms may have a “pot-bellied” appearance, vomiting, and poor growth. Puppies and kittens should be tested for worms when they get their shots. If untreated, roundworms can kill baby animals. Adult animals can also get roundworms. Hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms are similar to roundworms. Diarrhea, dehydration and weight loss are the most common symptoms. Sometimes you will see worms or parts of worms in your pet’s bowel movements, around the anus, or in their bedding.
Your vet can test babies and adults for worms. It is not very expensive to test and treat your pet for worms. If you are sure your dog has worms, you may save money by asking your vet for a wormer without a fecal test. Wormers can also be bought very cheaply at some pet stores. Be sure you follow the package directions carefully.
Good luck...

Round all the pets up and a poo sample from each animal (and some of the dead worms you found from the dog) and take them to the vet. Do this ASAP b/c the other animals might not be infected YET. Do not use the worm killers they sell in stores. They only kill some types of worms, but can be lethal for dogs if they don't have the worms the products are targeting. You'll probably need to give vet-prescribed meds to all of your pets for at least one course, in 2 weeks you'll probably need to take them all back to the vet with more stool samples to see if the other animals are still clear. The dog is going to need about 3 courses of treatments to be clear.

Could be flea larvae or dead pin worms. That is the only things that I can think of. I would take your dogs AND cats to the vet and get them checked out at the same time. Wash all things that all the animals come in contact with and disinfect what can't be washed and then vacuum everything.

You can buy worm stuff either online or at a feed store that's called Pyrantel.
Follow the instructions on the bottle.

Gosh, I don't know and thats very strange, I've never heard of black worms. I'd advise you to take it to the vet ASAP, it can be something contagious or even deadly.

put some of the worms in a baggie and take them and your dog to the vet to see if they can identify them.

REVOLUTION....It is just drops to apply to one spot, and really works...takes care of most parasites...
I wonder where it has been all my life!
You can get it at your vets for about $13....call around, as it is fairly new, and see which vets carry it.
