Students should not be allowed to use phones while in school. If there is an emergency, a parent can call the office or the office can call a parent. They are in school to learn. They must follow the rules of the building.

There is a lot of controversy on this subject. My thought is that younger children till about the age of 13 shouldn't have cell phones period. But once they get to the age where they are going to parties or have a bunch of afterschool activities should be equipped with one. A lot of schools take the phone if they see it. Now if the phone rings or is used during a class then it should be teken but the banning of them is quite stupid. What if the schedule of an activity is changed? And the student has a way home after that but if they go home on a bus they do not have a way into the house, the parents should be notified. I know at my middle school if schedules are changed we are not allowed to call if this happens. (call from the office) and our one and only pay phone does not work. In these cases cells are a must. Think on that.

Absolutley NOT! Children do not need cell phones at school for ANY REASON!! If there is an emergency, the parents can call the school just like they have done all the years before cell phones!!! Parents have got to get real and get a handle on their damn kids!!!

In general, I would discourage use of mobile phones in classrooms. But there may be legitimate reasons for a student to have a mobile phone and use it between classes.

I think that they should be allowed only at certain times. I know in my daughters junior high they only allow them to be used before and after school if you are caught using it and its not an emergency then it gets taken away....they dont allow the students to use the school phone even if they forgot their lunch and dont have one they cant use the phone to call their parents...a lot of schools are like that now...so yes I believe that they should allow cell phones but limit the times that they can use them

The use of cell phones in our society has become one of the most irritating habits I can think of. You get the feeling people these days can't function without them, and it drives me crazy. Am I the only person in the world that isn't soooo important that I have to be available for contact 24 hrs a day? Keep it out of schools

My 9 yr old daughter has a Verizon Amiga. It is a GPS locator and phone that can call 911 and 4 preprogrammed numbers(Mommy, Daddy, Brother, and Aunt on ours). The teachers like it because of the GPS and emergency abilities. The phone doesn`t ring all the time because the number is restricted so no one is distracted in class. She doesn`t know her own number.
We like it because we have peace of mind that we know where she is all the time and doesn`t cost much.
She likes it because she has peace of mind that she can call anyone in her family if needed and we know exactly where she is.
It took about 2 weeks for her to stop calling all of us all the time and now wears it and only calls us occasionally.

kids, teens with a phone is no problem as long as they know the purpose of it. if a kid takes a phone to school it is only so they have it for after school and should not use it during the day. my son is almost 11 and he has had his phone now for about 1 week and he takes it with him everywhere but school starts soon and im not sure if he will take it to school.

I think it is not advisable to give mobile phones at a very early age.

They shouldn't be banned because in case there's an emergency, the child can call the home or the parents at work. BUT - it should be kept in the bags during classes on either silent mode or off.
