Try the entertainment section of your local newspapers. Normally on Thurs. or Fridays, there'll be a special section that lists things like plays, exhibits at museums, stuff like that.

I'm very happy for your interest! I wish many more people would go to classical concerts....

About your question:
Depending on where you live- check the local concert house/symphony orchestra. (LA has a fenomenal philharmonic orchestra!)
They always have a program for the season and it's usually very obvious when there is a piano soloist. Sometimes the concert halls also have a chambermusic series, if you prefer to go to a piano recital whithout orchestra.
Of course you can go to the local colleges and listen to the students, I really encourage you to do so, but keep in mind that the REALLY good soloist are usually found in the concert houses.
It is also a question of taste and many soloist specialize in a certain style or period of music. Then it's a good thing to hear them play just that. Schools usually try to give their students a broader perspective so the students must perform all kinds of musical styles, also music that not happens to suit them.
But sometimes you can also find the rising stars there, hungry for fame and expressions!

Linked from the concert houses you can usually find a possibility to buy tickets.

Good luck!

Contact USC. I just finished playing the Emporer Concerto with the Inland Valley Symphony. There are alot of music organizations in Southern California, but you really have to know the industry a tad to be able to get show invites and stuff. If you have a music teacher, tell them to give you info on any shows they come across, because everyone in the industry comes across a ton of concerts.

I would call the music departments of UCLA or U of So. Cal. They have piano majors who put on free recitals all the time!
