I've seen on COPS millions of times when a police officer is pointing a gun at a suspect so that they can arrest them, but I was wondering since they do that all the time could the gun aciddently be fired. Or do you actually have to use force on the trigger to fire a bullet at someone?

It depends on the gun.
Some guns have the trigger set to a higher poundage.
Some have a "hair trigger". That is, the amount of pressure needed to pull the trigger is low.

RealTV had a video out which had a clip of a lady cop covering a suspect with her gun during an arrest when the gun went off. Didn't hit the suspect but I'm sure the guy's heart skipped a couple of beats.

Most guns have about a 6 lb trigger. That means that you must use 6 lbs of force to move the trigger. Not often will there be a missfire from something like that. If you live in the U.S. look in the phone book for a shooting range and see if they can set you up to try and shoot. Most can arrange a safety course for you. They will teach you how to safely handle a gun, how to load and unload it and let you fire one.

Old time shooter.

depends on the gun. some have hair triggers and others are double action and pulling the trigger first pulls the hammer back and then releases it. accidents can happen, that's why even with guns drawn police shouldn't have their finger on the trigger, but rather pointed straight out next to it - unless then intend to fire.

You have to pull the trigger. Only about 5lbs of pressure from your finger & BANG! Simple as that.... All shooters are taught not to place there finger on the trigger to prevent a AD. That is what the trigger guard is for.

I think most cops keep there finger next to but not on the trigger so they don't accidentally pull it. If they need to shoot, there finger is only a half second away.

I dont know about the cops but in the military we do have accidental discharges where some one dropped their weapon or something off the wall and the weapon will go off. It is not that hard to fire a weapon though.

Trigger pull can, and is, adjusted according to the weapon and the shooter. Try not to get your "facts" from COPS.

Sure, and cops don't get any training for it and they're generally stupid, so it must be easy, right? It's a lot harder than spelling or using the spell check and you obviously don't have that down.
