It is more about how cold the murder's blood is rather than the victims. Premeditation as opposed to emotional rage. Most states distinguish between the two, i.e. Murder 1st degree or Murder 2nd degree. If you have had time to reflect on it and your emotions are cool, calm and collected you generally get bonus points with a Murder One conviction from the State in the form of lifetime room and board or if your really lucky, all you Texas boys and girls, you get a free trip to the death house after a nice last meal with the warden. Murder two is still heavy but is a lessor charge with lessor punishments generally speaking.
" Meaning: with remorseless ruthlessness. Like a (cold-blooded) reptile, to act cruelly, without humanity. Origin or first use? Don't know.
COLD BLOOD -- "Early physiologists believed that the blood actually boiled within the body when a person grew excited and that it grew cold when someone was calm or detached.. While the term 'in hot blood' suggested by the belief is no longer heard (hot-blooded is), 'in cold blood' remains as common as it was back in the late 16th century.Mankind has always regarded calculated killing in cold blood as something less than human." "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997) "

A crime of passion, or a crime committed in the 'heat of the moment' is done in 'hot blood.' That is, one is angry and cannot reason and therefore the crime is somehow more understandable, then one done in 'cold blood.'
A cold blooded murder is one without provocation, or apparent motive that is committed without the excuse of emotion.
It is just a way to express the murderers state of mind/emotion when the act was committed.

cold blooded = without conscience or feeling ie. your heart is so cold the blood running thru it is cold
so cold blooded murder is done without any regard for the life you are taking, not in self defense

Cold-blooded refers to emotionless, because most "lower" animals, which are cold-blooded, reptiles for example, are not considered capable of higher emotions.

I would guess that it is because humans are warm blooded animals. So if your refer to "cold blooded" then your speaking of something that is not human. So....in a sense you are saying that they committed an inhumane act.

Cold-blooded means reptillian, usually snake. It means you are not human, and have no concience/soul/heart. It also means you have no emotion involved when you kill them, like it's not real or you just don't care.

i think it comes from the expression "icewater in the veins." that phrase denotes someone who is extraordinarily calm under pressure. i could see how "cold-blooded" would have evolved from that term, but i'm not sure that's where it comes from.
