What goes around comes around.
For me this one is the ultimate. It's the karma principle in one clean elegant sentence. It means treat people as you want to be treated. If you're evil, you get evil back. If you are nice, you reap goodness.

In the middle ages, because people drank ale from pewter tankards (the chemical reaction of the two together) caused the effect of extreme drunkeness ...sometimes people would collapse in a comatose state and be believed to be dead...as time went on, and graveyards became overcrowded, it was necessary to exhume corpses to make more room...in many cases scratch marks were evident on the inside of the coffin lids...so the occupants had been buried alive...to prevent this happening again, at each "suspicious" burial, a string was attatched to the wrist of the "corpse", and and this was then attatched to a bell above the grave... after the funerals, someone was assigned to watch the graves in question each day and night...this person was given..."The graveyard shift", and people who were buried alive, but benefitted from this new service were said to have been "Saved by the Bell"
