We all know it is a fact that religion importance and IQ are negativly correlated, such as in uneducated areas, but do you think it is religion that lowers IQ or is it a low IQ that causes the need for religion in the first place.

It is very clear that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between religiosity and intelligence. Apart from the studies that were done over the past 80 years, all one has to do is read the answers in this forum to observe that for most religious people that ask and answer questions here, reason is an alien concept.

There are highly intelligent people who believe in God and adhere to a religion. Unfortunately, those of lower intellecutal endowment have a tendency to do or say stupid things in the name of religion that makes all religion look moronic.

Oh, and for the record: my IQ is 183. What's yours?"

Well, I think that SLWrites is lying... for a couple of reasons. First of all, a standard IQ test does not yield a score of 183... scores above 145 are very tricky to calculate, and require extraordinary effort and additional, specialized tests, which are typically undertaken only when it is suspected that someone of extreme genius is at hand. So, this causes my bullsh*t alarm to go off.

Secondly, it would be very unlikely that someone with an IQ of 183 would be religious. IQ tests measure a persons ability to employ reason, logic and critical though skills in problem solving. Religious belief cannot withstand the application of those intellectual tools. So, either SLWrites is lying, or he has the kind of compartmentalization aberrations that are seen only in idiot savants.

Since there are those who choose to never question their faith and base their lives around archaic, dated, false premises yes religion lowers IQ. Additionally, the mere fact that questioning is considered a sin by many western Crhistian sects leads to the idea that keeping the populace dumb will keep them obiedant. Did you know that Guttenberg was considered a Heretic by the Chruch...Wonder why? Well, now the worst book (BIBLE) ever written can get to the masses for their take on it and maybe, just maybe they'll question it. PEACE!

I think religion makes you stagnant, you stop growing as a person. So I guess it lowers you IQ.

If you have the capacity to accept God as your Lord and Saviour, that is all that matters.
