You need to go to the dentist and get anti-biotics and painkillers until they can root canal or pull the tooth. Otherwise there is a slim chance you could die, but a long and painful wait (if it doesn't get worse, which normally it will go down, in my experience,) until it gets better. I use to use a "cocktail" of 2 tylenol and 4 advil, and then when I got my wisdom teeth pulled, they actually had this as a painkiller alternative to the Percocet. Anbesol and topical pain killers (even clove bud oil,) will also help numb the affected area. Be sure to wash your mouth regularly with warm salt water, and use hydrogen peroxide as a rinse at least once a day until the area heals a bit.
Still, I've had many an abcessed tooth, and the OTC stuff doesn't always help. Just call your dentist and he will normally give you some antibiotics and pain meds. Otherwise you will be chipmunk face at some point, and it will probably stop aching in a week...until it starts again... :P Basically until you can get that tooth root canalled or removed, it will keep bugging you.
Also, those abcesses can grow, and they eat away your jaw bone and can destroy your other teeth, so don't delay too long on getting it fixed.

A dentist will have to prescribe a dose of antibiotics. You MUST take ALL the dosage, not just til you feel better because symptoms could feel better but the infection not be completly gone. Also do not drink any alcoholic bevs while on antibiotics as this reduces the strenth of medicine. Not just any antibiotic will do so dont assume you can use someone elses as the dentist will know exactly which one you need

you need to see a dentist(a general practitioner or much better a periodontist-who specializes on these cases). ask for a rootcanal treatment(rct). rct requires xrays of the affected tooth prior to the procedure. then if you're prepared,it could only be a one-sitting procedure wherein you wouldn't be needed to comeback for a second appointment. afterwhich would you be prescribed with the best meds(antibiotics and painrelievers)appropriate for your case. be careful of self-medication,this would sometimes aggravate the condition.
in the meantime, avoid anything(foods especially) that would trigger the abscess like hot spicy foods, chicken, eggs (prepared sunny side-up or raw).
never take this for granted until such time that the only solution left is extraction (of the affected tooth).

The fastest way, it to drink a small glass of rum straight up. If you don't want to do that, put some ice on your face and lie down on the other side. Ice helps when it comes to most tooth problems. Stay away from anything hot!

You need to go see a dentist. You can't get rid of an abscess on your own. Trust me. I have seen patients admitted to the hospital with even bigger problems because they didn't get treatment for their abscesses in time.

if you can't get to a dentist right away, oil of clove is a tooth soothing agent. ibuprofen works well, but an abscess will hurth even thru the strongest pain drugs.
