If you are serving in a combat role, in a combat situation or in training; (Pilots, MPs, Special Ops, etc...). Typically the answer is no. I knew many Corpsmen and Boatswains Mates that only had shot an M-16 in bootcamp. You typically dont carry a weapon around unless your job requires you to be using it at that moment. Even grunts dont carry weapons around with them all the time, unless you actually need to be.

In the Navy..roving security watches, Gate Guards, Quartedeck Master at Arms will all carry weapons while on duty. MAs may also carry personal sidearms when working. RPs will also carry a side arm to protect the Chaplain while in the field. FMF HMs carry weapons whilein the field. Other situations may entail carrying weapons.
