Do I have to pay it off before I cancel it? How can I cancel it? I don't want the card anymore.

You can call the customer service number (should be a toll-free number on the back of the card, or on your statement). Tell them that you do not want to accept any more charges on this account. Then cut up the card so you won't be tempted to use it.

Pay off the account balance, *then* cancel the account after it's paid off.

Good luck!

Don't cancel it before you pay it off. Cancelling an account with an outstanding balance on it doesn't look good on your credit report. Just cut up the card so you won't be tempted to use it anymore; pay off the balance as fast as you can, and THEN write to cancel the account. There will be an address on your bill somewhere that tells you where to write to the company.

Send them payment in full. Wait until the next billing statement to verify that the balance is zero. Then cut the card in half and send it back to them with a request to close the account.

Although you could cancel the card first and then pay it off, some credit card agreements provide for a much higher interest rate if you close the account before paying it off. Avoid that hassle but just hanging on to it until the account is paid in full.
