Kentucky has made it impossible for me to pay my fine. I owed a $100.00 fine from years ago (no excuse, I should of paid it), I had forgotten all about it.

I was with a friend who got pulled over, my name was run and I was under arrest. I had no money (totally and couldn't get any) so I asked if I could set my fine out in jail. The judge ok'd it and off to jail I went.

I sat there for ten days. I was given $10.00 a day credit. I was being processed out of booking and doing the paperwork. I was told that I owed the jail $245.00. They was charging me $20.00 a day to set there plus a $45.00 booking fee.

They was nice enough to give me some time to pay it. If I don't pay it, they will take me to court and get even more money (or try to).

A hundred bucks isn't much but when you haven't worked for 7 months, it is a lot. I got hurt and had to file for disability. The money is not the issue but what they did is....What are your thoughts on this?

They wanted a new state slogan for Kentucky. I think this one is the best...

COME TO KENTUCKY ON VACATION, GO HOME ON PROBATION

Bluefire, thank you for your comment. Yes, I should of paid my fine right away (no excuses). As to the part of employment. I am a truck driver and I am doing therapy to get back to work as soon as I can. I don't see myself asking "would you like fries with that order". When I'm not doing the therapy, I'm flat on my back. I figured I could be flat on my back in jail as easy as at home. A hundred bucks buys food for my family. Which one you of chose?

This is actually not unconstitutional and is quite common in correctional systems. That daily fee covers the cost of food, housing, and any program services. i.e medical, dental, mental. The fine you owed is one payment, the daily fees are completely seperate.

Your daily cost is used to defray the inmate housing costs. A search of inmate housing costs in the state of Kentucky shows that it costs the state an average of $40.82 a day to house an inmate. That is an average and it can vary from county to county. Some counties cost as much as 75.00 a day, some as low as 22.00 a day.

Taxpayers and the federal government pick up only a portion of the housing costs and with inmate numbers on the rise, it is not uncommon to find counties using inmates fees to defray costs.

While it may seem unfair to you, simply put, is it more fair to force taxpayers who are law abiding to pay the costs to house, feed, and provide medical care to someone who broke the law?

You can also approach the judge and ask for a fee reduction on the grounds that you are physically unable to work , thus not pay the fees. Might work, might not.

You probably don't want my thoughts, but since you asked...

Disability or not, you can get a job. It's obvious to me that you can sit and type, so find a job where your disability can be accomodated.

That said, it sounds to me like you are in need of a good kick in the ***. Quit blaming the rest of the world for picking on poor little you, pay your fines, quit whining and stand up and be a man. It's time to grow up and accept resonsibility for your lack of paying your fine originally.

Sitting in jail isn't free. Food, utilities, wages etc. So the Citizens of Kentucky should give you a free ride because you didn't pay your fine? Really guy, it's time to grow up.

As a licensed Texas Attorney I must say I believe what they did to be unconscionable, and I probably unconstitutional. One of the greatest concepts to come from our founding fathers was that in the USA one could not be jailed merely because we owed money. What Tenn. is doing abouts to indenture servitude.

Sounds to me like they were trying to screw you pal, where I live if you go to jail for $100 fine you would sit five days earn $20 a day towards your fine. No paying to be there, I would check into those things ASAP otherwise you will be sitting in jail for quite awhile.
