My cat Auto has had 3 urinary tract infections -- I know all about them -- we even had him to the animal ER once and he's been on a decathater (sp?) twice -- it makes him miserable! He is on the Hill's Science Diet C/D too (well actually he just switched to W/D -- which is a low fat verstion). The prescription food does not hurt the other cats -- all three of ours eat the same thing. The vet recommended separating them to eat (it would save money -- but you probably know how realistic that is) but told us it would do no harm to the other kitties.
I don't think it would be terribly harmful to allow the cat outside -- maybe ask the neighbor if they'd mind picking up their food? I highly reccommend staying with the prescription diet, Auto has been on it for about two years now and we haven't had any more problems.
Another option our vet offered, was they can perform a surgery where they snip the tip of the cats penis off to give him a larger opening for passing crystals. I kind of wanted to go ahead and do that we've litterally spent thousands of dollars on that cat due to UTIs, but they wanted to try the food first.
Feel free to contact me if you want more info.

srry if this isn't relevant to your question. my cat Tiger had this same problem. but unfortunatly, my vet misdiagnosed him and his condition worsened over a course of a year. he was at the vet every other month because he couldn't go to the bathroom. she kept telling me that he had bladder infections and to give him antibiotics and soon he'll be fine. only he didn't have that, he had cytitis, which I recently found out from an emergency vet. sadly, since he had been misdiagnosed, his condition had been untreated. the vet said that I had know other choice but to have him put sleep because is his kidneys were either close or already completly destroyed from not urinating regularly. he was only 2 years old. I blame it all on that dumbass vet of mine. actually, she's not my vet anymore. I changed for the sake of my other pets. so in my own personal opinion and experience you should have a second opinion because the emergency vet that I talked to didn't tell me anything like that. I think some of those vets are just out there looking for a fast buck off a sick animal. at least that's what mine did. she didn't help my cat, she helped kill him!!!!!!!!! srry!! I just get so pissed off when I think about this. is your cat urinating right by his litterbox or somewhere else in the house? mine used it right by his litterbox for the longest time. I hope I helped you!! Trust Me, I Know Exactly What You're Going Through!!!! I went through it for almost 2 years.

My cat is also a male and he had the same problems. We took him to the vet and he was put on a special food that none of the other cats that we have can eat. My cat is also indoors. And, yes. the my cat, is on the food for the rest of his life too. It's hard to keep the other cat's away from his food. but its something that we had to do. I wouldn't take the cat outside just because you don't know how they might reatct. It's just to be safer. Hope this helps!

When I was a kid we had several cats, one with a urinary tract problem. We could only feed him Science Diet cat food. It is the best, not just a money maker. It kept him very healthy, and didnt have to keep going to vet that would cost more in long run. It is safe for the other cats, however to keep cost down feed him seprately. Oh, it may cause some diareia in the dog, maybe even alittle in the cats that dont need it.

Yes hes gotta stay on that diet. Cats who are once diagnosed have a higher chance of getting it again. C/d's a good food and yes its safe for other cats to eat it.
Urinary tract infections mostly occur from poor food choices in the first place. Unfortunatly not alotta people know about it until their cat gets it.

I had a cat that had this problem too. He had to be on a special low ash diet. It did help. When he did die (several years later, he was 12), it was because his kidneys gave out. Don't give him any other food. There's a reason the vet wants to give him a certain one. It's to keep him alive. Good luck with your kitty.

I think I would take the vet's advise over any here. If it is the cost of the food explain to the vet and ask if he can recommend something less expensive.

do not let him eat other food! he could have serious problems with digesting. if he wants to be outside get a large cage and put him inside then sit the cage on the porch put screen on first so no mosquitos give him food and water too and keep it to a time on the dot so your cat gets used to it you probably shouldnt let others eat it check with the vet
