We want to have a full meal for our guests at our outdoor semi-formal/casual (not too formal, not too casual) wedding reception. Any suggestions? We are on a budget, so nothing too expensive. No alcohol will be served, so we can cut costs there, as well.

Thanks in advance!

Most of the guests are the "church-going group" as lazydazy put it in her response. My fiance and I don't drink either, so that is the obvious reason there will be no alcohol.

i would call local caterers . In that way it would be more relaxing for you . If you don't mind the extra work or have someone to watch over things ( set up , refills , clean up etc.. ) . Call local grocery stores deli dept . They typically have platters as well as hot foods and deserts and wedding cakes. You will also need to check with your reception site . Some places only work with certain caterers or vendors. They also will give you names of people that they have had only great success in working with

What month is your wedding in and what time of the day is the reception going to be?

Once you've answered those two questions, you can go ahead better planning this. Since you said there will be no alcohol, I would suggest a sparkling non-alcoholic cider for the toasts. You can get a variety of flavours and they're perfect for dry weddings.

You could do a buffet of sorts so depending on what time of day depends on what you serve. If it's a lunch reception, than sandwiches, veggie platters, cheese & cracker trays and some lighter desserts as well as your wedding cake. For a dinner reception, just expand on this. Add some hot dishes, maybe a carving station (Roast Beef, Pork, etc) or a BBQ if it is in the summer. You could also add a dessert buffet if your budget permits for a dinner reception.

No alcohol?!! I'm just going to put this out there, and you can tell me to stuff it, but the receptions I've been to where there is no alcohol have been the absolute dullest!
Now if you have a church going group, maybe it will be okay, but otherwise, I would highly suggest figuring something else out.
How about cutting down on the number of guests?
Or buy your own liquor and charge a couple bucks for a drink (my best friend did this and we were all fine with it. We knew her budget was tight, and it made the evening way more fun.)
Or serve free wine and beer before dinner, and a cash bar after wards. People do that a lot when they don't want their guests getting sloshed.

For our wedding we had a buffet style and had the dj call each table that way everyone got served and whatever was left they were free to go back..

We had a nice spread
Ham and turkey and Chicken
Mashed potatoes
Corn
Green beans
peas
red beets
red eggs
cole slaw
potato salad
And ice cream!

I had a cash bar.. and i put a card in the invatations that there is going to be a cash bar.. . the hall had a bar in the back where people could go and get drinks.. and i had a rule no hard stuff.. and i bout a barrel of beer and gave each table one pitcher so they didn't think i was to cheap..lol

Buffets will usually cut cost but NEVER NEVER EVER HAVE A CASH BAR!!! I cant stress this enough. You dont invite guests to your home and ask them to pay you for a drink. Why would you ask them to your wedding, knowing that they already probably bought you a gift and then ask them to pay for one. Its best to not serve liquor rather than have a cash bar. As far as food goes talk to a few different people in your town to find out who does low cost catering. You may also have a friend that has a passion for cooking that can help you out. You never know unless you ask.

A buffet sounds perfect for this type of event. Serve a chicken dish and a veggie option, with a pasta side and salads.

Have a chocolate fountain for later, instead of an expensive cake, and serve plenty of non-alcoholic punch (or consider a cash bar)

My wedding is a beach sort of theme so I am having a shrimp boil, with the requisite corn and potatoes. But having fried fish and hamburgers for the non-shrimp eaters. But, I am having at most 30 people so I don't know if this will be helpful to you.

Buffet is definately the least expensive. i have had two weddings and both were buffet to cut costs. as for alcohol - i would at least do a cash bar.

See if your favorite restaurand does caterings. You can go for a BBQ theme and have it displayed buffet style. Good luck
