My boyfriend is canadian and we've been together for over 2 years. We're considering the possibility of immigrating to Canada, having him sponsoring me. We are not married, but we do qualify as "conjugal partners"... is it a bad idea to try it out this way without getting married?

let me answer this since I am currently going through the spousal sponsorship. the process is long and drawn out, it isn't quick and costs a fair bit. I don't know whether or not conjugal partners have the same responisbilities as spouses....but if they do then your boyfriend is responsible for your basic needs(food/shelter/clothing/medical) for anywhere between 3-10 years. You won't be able to work right off the get go unless you have a job offer prior to entering Canada. Do your homework prior to taking this all on as it will take a while.

Go to the website and see if this is what you want to do. I could talk forever on this subject as I have done months of reading, phone calls and talking to immigration offices. My husband is coming up from the US in September, finally.

Good luck....the website has everything you need to know and the toll free number is useful as well.

Go for it!! I am Canadian for Quebec but now i am in the US because my boyfriend now husband married me. I wish we were in Quebec or Toronto, but Quebec is French and he doesn't really speak French.. Toronto would be great but a bit too far from our families. Really, you should go for it if you would like too. Canada is a very safe country, it is not that cold (come on!), we have four seasons, in Quebec or Montreal, it is cold during winter but it's about the same as in the State of Maine. Plus, people are very friendly compare to people in U.S (but Americans have reasons to be not as friendly, like to protect themselves.). Anyway, i think it's a good idea! Where is your boyfriend from?

Good luck. I just recently left from up there and miss it very much. I wanted to stay but the cold environment changed my mind. (Ontario). I love the country and found the people exceptionally nice. And yes, Canada does have "common-law" rules. Try it for a few months before marriage. Don't know where you are from but would be good if you just gave it a trial period.
