The same reason they are scared of other imaginary monsters that are intended to be scary, e.g. ghosts, dragons, griffins, etc. One can control childish people by using fear. In earlier Bible books, Lucifer the Satan or Devil had not yet been invented. It is a serpent who tempts Eve in Genesis, and Yahweh or God hardens the heart of a nameless pharoah in Exodus. Zoroaster of Persia invented a war between the gods Ahuramazda and Ahriman. During the Persian Captivity, Hebrew priests saw it'd make a neater system to have separate sources of good and evil like this, so they borrowed Ahriman and renamed him the Satan.

The Bible doesn't tell us exactly what the devil looks like; the pictures you see of him (with horns and a red suit and so forth) simply come from the artist's imagination. Similar pictures have been around for hundreds of years, however, and were meant to warn people about Satan. Satan is evil, and even these pictures should warn us not to have anything to do with him.
Satan, the Bible says, is totally evil—and yet he can disguise himself so people don't even realize who he is. In fact, the Bible says that sometimes "Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14, KJV). Satan's goal is always to stop God's work. He tried to stop Jesus from going to the cross for our sins, and he will try to keep you from God.
Satan is real—but don't concentrate on him. Concentrate instead on Jesus, because He is stronger than Satan, and by His death and resurrection He defeated Satan. The Bible says, "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work" (1 John 3:8). Ask Jesus to come into your life today because God loves you and Jesus wants you to walk with Him every day.
Don't picture Satan, however, the way the cartoons do—as a comic figure with a red suit and a pitchfork who bothers people sometimes but otherwise has little influence. Satan is a very powerful cosmic spiritual personality who has one goal: to stop God's work wherever it is taking place. To accomplish this he schemes and works every way he can, and he is behind all the evil that takes place in the world. His name—Satan—literally means "Adversary"—and that is what he is: our adversary.
More than that, the devil works to deceive us and convince us that his promises are true and God's Word is a lie. Jesus said that the devil "was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8:44). Don't ever take Satan lightly!
But one other thing needs to be said about the devil: He is a defeated foe! By His death and resurrection Jesus Christ conquered all the forces of death and Hell and Satan, and when we belong to Christ, we are safe from all these terrors forever. Make sure of your salvation by giving your life to Christ today.

I watch Duck Tales with Satan all the time. He isn't scary at all, he's a really nice guy. I once told Satan this joke, a really funny joke, and he laughed so hard that souls came out of his nose! Hahahah! It was the best; Satan is a cool guy. Not literally though, just in attitude.

In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.
Love and blessings

I think he would watch South Park. I mean he is a regular on there. I would personally watch myself on TV if I could.
Really though, The fear of satan is easy to understand.. Your painted this picture in the Bible of someone who wants bad things to happen to you, he wants you to be miserable and live in fear. The funny part is that you are taught this by the followers of God who also wanted you to be afraid in the Old Testament of the Bible. God was Cruel and Mean. He didn't take any "backtalk" as it were. He would strike you down in a heartbeat.
So you do the math does any of it make sense??

Satan doesn't look like that, Man made it up. People are scared of him because they dont know God. When your in God's glory Satan has a hard time working. But when we start sinning we go into darkness and we become scared. Its Satans job to cause injury to us, read the book of Job it will answer alot of your questions.

He is a liar and that is his power to corrupt people, fear him only if you serve him. The cool thing is if you are in his service there is no loyality and he will use you like toilet paper and cast you aside. He is weak having been here for a long time and not being connected to god anymore.
Its kinda like the LOTR books he is on earth will God has the heavens and the universe. Who do you think will be the winner in a contest like that.

hai, i think u r comic buff.U really got funny picture of satan. But that's the wrong picture about him.Bible says he is the morning star,he was the worship leader in God's kingdom and he was the most beautiful creature ever created.
But he fell because of his pride.
God gives but does not take it back,so things remain the same except that now satan if against his creator.
satans another name is "deceiver", so he could deceive you with forms also not necessarily with horible face or onida cute devil.
he is the old serpent.Dont be deceived by him.
