There is no set age. It depends on where they are going, how long it will take and how many roads they have to cross to get there. I used to play out and go places when I was very young like 5, but I had my older brother with me. (Think I'd have actually been safer on my own!!)
I would let a 5 or 6 year old go to the shop, if there wasn't any big roads to cross, and if they were coming straight back. If they had a friend that lived close by I would let them go to there house on their own, if they phoned when they arrived and again had no big roads to cross.
Saying this, if I thought my child was still too imature at the age of 5 (which is not a problem) I would wait until I did think they were old enough.
independence is so important, but so is being safe.

I started going to town and the cinema with friends when I was about 10 still in primary school. It was very educational, although I didn't realise at the time!

First of all every child is going to have there own progression. Some children are going to prove to be mature enough at the age of 5 and others may run into the street until they are 12. Watch your childs behavioral patterns in everyday life with you. Rather than taking his/her hand and walking them across the street evertime. Let your child move ahead of you and see if they look both ways before crossing the street. In the home: Do they remember to flush the toilet or turn off the sink. Is your child becoming more self sufficient going to bed and handling general necessities like getting dressed and getting food and drink.

Hmmm this could be tricky. I used to let my children go out on their own during the day when they reached 13. At night it was 18. After all, they cant go drinking till they hit 18. (legally) But just to go to friends houses or to a youth club, 13/14. If i thought one of my children was hanging around street corners today, i think i would lock them up till they were 30. lololol My daughter lets her 7 year old play out in the street where she can keep an eye on him. I worry about that though, especially in todays world. Depends really on your area and the childs friends.

Where I live you are not allowed to have an unsupervised child under the age of 10 and then it goes by a certain amount of hours depending on age they can be left alone.

so I'd say 10 or 11

At no age and at no point in time. Both fathers and mothers have become terrorist and criminal in allowing their child to go out on his/her own at prime age, when God actually straddled us with sacred responsibilities of taking care of them from cradle to our grave. We give then love and care at tender age even into marriage and motherhood/fatherhood.
In return they are to honor and fend for us at our senile or pulsied age.
Criminally, we now let go babies [3mths, 6mths, 2,3 yrs etc] and they in return, dump these parents at the old ppls home. What a crime!
No age will id ump my child or let go- i'd always be there for them- Insha Allaah.

at what that is a dumb question let your child go out once he is at the end of sixth grsde cuz thats when their gonna start bothering you so let them hang out wit their friends and go to the mall its what they want to do not sit around in the house all day when I was a child I hated it when my mom kept me in the house my friends were doing better things then I could think about when you were bored at home cuz your mom wouldnt let you out. they are not to young give them a cell pone to call you on emergencys and they will call but dont sit right next to the phone and wonder "when my baby is coming home" and if they do call dont be like "whats wring you didnt call" cuz then thats how fights start and you dont want that.
