they can afford? My in laws are pushing us to have a big wedding and I object and so does my fiance. We think it is wasteful, tacky and ostentatious.

A lot of it has to do with culture. Some cultures feel that the more money they spend on a big celebration (like a wedding) than the better they look to their friends and family. It is possible to do a wedding for around 10k when having all the "traditional" elements to a wedding but it is quite easy for people to spend as much as a really nice house as well (250k). In the end, it is your and your fiance's day and it's whatever you feel comfortable with. If you don't want it to be big and tacky, then tell your in laws that. It's your day - not theirs.

Compromise with your in laws, if they want to do a big wedding then should atleast pitch in with the expenses. A big wedding doens't neccessarily mean an expensive wedding. Just spend on the essentials like the caterer. Maybe you can enlist some help from your talented relatives to do the flowers, cake, or even DJ the reception. It all really boils down to the bride and groom and what they want. You fiance is on your side on this, he should talk to his parents to respect both your wishes.

Pay only what you can afford (and that's different to the amount of money you have available).

We could afford a wedding of a certain style...our guests were happy and so were we...we didn't compromise on our life goals for one day.

If your in-laws want "the big wedding", accept the money and put a downpayment on a house instead.

It is your wedding, not their's. ....though sometimes couples spend more money than they really can afford, because one or more of the parents is extremely controlling. Sometimes going along with what they want is easier than listening to the years of complaints that will follow. I hope your future in laws are NOT like that. Good luck!

If your paying for it then it doesn't matter what anyone else wants
