I know people that get paid to play on Easter Sunday or Christmas Eve or various other church celebrated holidays. They have to go to practices for a couple hours during the week, and then play at 1-3 services generally. Not to mention the time it took them to get good enough to perform in public on whatever instrument they have.

Now, I've also heard plenty of religious people saying those same people should play for free out of the goodness of their hearts. God gave them a talent and they should share it freely. Why shouldn't they get paid for all the hard work they put in and what is a fair amount?

I agree. If musicians don't get paid, neither should the pastor/rabbi, etc.

I have mixed feelings- if it were me I would probably do it for free. Are they playing at the actual Sunday service or at a celebration- ie.. church sponsored Easter Egg Hunt. I think that makes a difference too. Also is this what they do for a living? If so are they a member of that church or congregation? I am inclined to say if they are not a member of that congregation- compensation should be offered to them especially if they do it for a living. I have no problem paying people for that kind of service. At least compensate them for their expenses.

That being said- at my church nobody, not even the clergy, gets paid for their service- I think in most cases this kind of stuff is done on a volunteer basis- some people may charge a nominal fee.

I believe that gospel musicians should get paid for their services. A great number of musicians use their service in church as their primary source of income. Musicians use their God given talents to earn money to provide for their families and pay bills.

I have never understood why people believe that church musicians shouldn't get paid. When this question comes up again, and I'm sure it will, I hope that the person that is asking the question will put themselves in the place of the musician with only their gifts of playing church instruments used to make an income.

If they are hired they should get compensated. However, it is always a great idea to have people from within the church fill the musical roles.

They should be compensated. If they choose to give it back to the church that's their decision.

As for the fair amount. Whatever the going rate in your area is.

yes, they should be compensated.

Luk 10:7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house.

unless of course, they choose to donate that time and talent of their own free will. however, they shouldn't be expected to or pressured into feeling that they should do it for free.
