Dogs sense of taste is much less sensitive than humans with dogs only having about one thousand seven hundred taste buds in their mouths while humans have about nine thousand.
Dogs really dislike bitter tastes but beyond that, virtually anything goes. Like humans, dogs have a powerful sweet tooth, which explains their predilection for doughnuts, ice cream, and other calorie-laden vices.
Although their limited number of taste buds register sweet, sour bitter, and salty tastes, it is probably more realistic to think of the dog's response to taste as pleasant, indifferent, or unpleasant. Smell is the dog's most advanced sense - a large part of its brain is devoted to interpreting scent

taste and smell are so closely linked its impossible for them not to...like when you smell some food and your mouth waters..just b/c they gulp food down without really chewing doesn't mean they dont taste either...its all common sense

I have to believe they taste. My dogs have always perked up when they were given leftover steak and what not. In fact my dogs will ignore their food if they think they will get mine.

my dog knows exactly what kinds of treats he likes and what kind of food he likes....i'm sure smell plays a part, but taste is very present for him.

Yes, but not like ours. Dogs do not "sense" hot in their tongues...my oldest rot will eat jalepinos until she foams around the nose. No, I don't give them to her... she counter surfed and ate them. She hates pickles, though.

OF COARSE THEY DO! you know dogs usually don't eat veggies because they don't like them. they enjoy bones and milk bones because they can taste them. Plus if they didn't, it would be much easier to feed them.
