Then maybe mothers who let their kids outside unattened aren't true mothers. How would you like being stuck inside a house your whole life and never breathing fresh air and feeling the wind and sun on your face. It's like being in prison, because you're always behind bars and some sorta recess. Same thing. You care about your cat when take care of it when sick or has a diaese, when it needs fleas to stop biting it, to give it food, giving it shelter from the rain, and most important of all love. If you just feed your cat and keep it indoor that's the same thing as feeding a stray and you're worse than I thought.

Not letting your cat outside means you're to lazy and don't want to take on more responsibilty like treating it's wounds.

Besides your cat will escape one day or the other because I knew this little girl who had a kitten that was treated well and very healthy and seemed happy or was she? She escaped and I guess she knew that if she went back, this would be her last time to be alone out in the real world, so she ran away and never came back.

We see her from time to time, but she never came home.

If I were a cat and escaped being an indoor cat, I would travel to other places as I want to right now as a human but it costs money and I can't afford to go to all the places I want. I would rather be free then a prisoner like most are now these days. Ctas are indepented and can take care of themselves when outside. Right now my cat owns. When he wants out, he wants. When he wants food, he wants food (normally when he asks it's his feeding time, so I quess he know, but he just reminds me). When he wants me up, I get up.

My cat's perfectly healthy and he goes outside. Cats are smart enough to take care of themselves. My cat some how got out when he was really young. In about two or three hours he came back and seemed satisfyed.

Lets look at the dangers there are. Wolves? Climb tree with high branches that can hold wheight and same with dogs. Owls? Mask sent and hide in bush, log, or hole if no one lives there. Cars? Lay down, so car will go over. Evil People (like you seem to be)? Can be avoided or run away and hide somewhere.

There are probably more but cats are smart enough. If you never let your cat go outside without supervision (maybe wacth from inside) your cat will never be prepared fo when something happens and he/she has to be on his/her own. Just because I let my cat outside doesn't mean I don't love him anymore and you should stay out people's bussiness unless the cat or animal is really being abused or not tacken care of properly. True cat owners would let their cat(s) outside like a true mothers would let their kids outside. It's part of life and would be a daily routine for a cat. The daily routine for an indoor cat would be to lay around the house all day since there's nothing else to do for them and they might as wll become fat. I listen to my cat and in return I get someone to listen to me when no one will. My cat goes outside and I love him dearly. He's my companion for life and I'm taking him with me when I move out and I'm taking with me where ever I will go.

What would sicken you most, a perfectly healthy indoor/outdoor cat or an obessed (over weight) indoor cat. I thought so, an obessed cat would sicken you more. You should be ashamed of yourselves. It's a cats nature to go outside and against nature's law. Hope your cat isn't fat (poor kitties and SHAME ONE YOOOUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

You are never a cat owner, in the way that you are a dog owner. I share my life with an indoor cat, my Bengal Loki. Loki goes out once a day for a walk on a leash. I use the walking jacket (available from metpet.com), which works much better that the multstrap harness.

I think true cat fanatics would never describe themselves as cat owners. They also do not declaw, they neuter or spay (unless they are a breeder) and keep the cat inside. Better for the cat, better for the native birds. All my cats have been indoor cats.

It's a dangerous world out there.

I couldn't agree with you more!!!! Way to go!!!!! People just haven't got a brain!!!!! CATS CAN NOT TAKE CARE OF THEMSELVES!!!!!!! that's just some dumb realization that someone made up. in my opinion, if you let your cat roam outside unattended then not only are you a irresponsible cat owner but you also don't care at all about your cats well being!!!!!!!

viki: you analyze this stuff way too much, you think cats are just like humans. WELL THEY'RE NOT, THEY'RE A COMPLETLY DIFFERENT SPECIES. YOU HAVE ABSOLUTLY KNOW RIGHT JUDGING PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!!!!!

Easy. All you have to do to own a cat is.... PURCHASE it.
As for the "care about cats" part... cats are very independent; they can take care of themselves. They certianly don't need supervision outdoors.
I don't like the idea of letting them outside, either, but they can be incredibly annoying if you don't give them what they want. They'll meow, walk on you when you sleep, or find some other way to keep you up at night.
All of our cats were outdoor cats; we've had them several years (5+) and they went out almost every day... so it's not nearly as dangerous as you might think.

You can't. I think that letting your cat sit on the porch while you are out there watering the grass or something is fine. But to let your cat be an inside outside cat is terrible. First of all....There are so many people out there that are sick and twisted and don't mind hurting cats. IE: trying to run them over, pouring antifreeze down, catching them and tourchering them. If you make a commitment to have any sort of animal, you should treat them as part of your family. You wouldn't let your child run outside whenever they wanted to, would you? YOu wouldn't give your dog full access to the front yard, would you? NO! So what is the difference with cats? Also I hate how people say that cats are independant and can be alone. NOT TRUE. It is all in how you raise them. If you want your cat to be loving and in a sense like a dog, you need to spend time with them, like you would a dog. When people come to my home my cats are all up in their business. Just as a dog would be. So unless you are going to be a responsible owner, and spay/neuter your cats, keep them indoors, and give them love.........DON'T GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. Cats should not be left outside unattended. One of my cats used to meow to go out so I leash trained him. If a cat isn't leash trained, they can live perfectly happy lives indoors with toys and interaction with people. My other cat has never been outside and he never tries to go out. My neighbor used to let his cat roam around outside. I had to swerve to avoid hitting the cat with my car twice. Some people could care less about hitting a cat that's crossing the street and a lot of mean people try to poison cats that run around the neighborhood because they don't want them in their garden. I love my cats too much to risk it.

There was an ad in my local newspaper that was giving away 2 outdoor cats. They needed to go to a home with no small children or other pets. I guess the person didn't realize that the outdoor world was much more dangerous than children and other animals. Some people just don't get it. I like cats but choose not to own one because I can't stand cleaning a litter box.

Because cats have a right to go outside too. Just cause they are sall dont mean they should be stuck in the house all day. My cat loves it outside, shes a cat. She knows how to fend for herself. She was gone for 14 days and made her way home, so im sure shes doing something right. If my cat didnt like it outside, she wouldnt want to go outside!

I am not a cat owner. My cats own me, not the other way (just ask them. They get most anything they want). My cats go out only if someone is outside with them. They are indoor cats 99 percent of the time. When they go outside, they can only go twenty feet away from the house (we have a big yard). We discourage them from hunting anything but bugs and toads.

Mooch won't eat grass we buy for her. Since our lawn is untreated, we let her go outside to eat grass. The other cats, Faith and Mocha, like to go outside to investigate.

But, again, our cats own us. If they want us up at 5 am, they will wake us up, pestering us until we get up. (Which, Mooch has done).

Actually, humans cannot be cat owners. They can only be the staff to the cat that owns them :)

My neighbors leave their cat out all day. They work nights and sleep all day. I am a birder and love feeding the birds. Unfortunately my neighbors cat loves to kill the birds and then leave them on my deck. I've decided to no longer feed the birds if it puts them in so much danger. Except for humming birds. I don't think any cat could catch one of them.
and... yes I've told the neighbor about the problem, but they didn't seem to care.

Would this apply to " dog owners", some cats are trained to go to the bathroom outside, so the owners let them out.
